I've been going to the Waverly area for almost 20 years and during that time there was never an operating A&P there.

It appears to be an earlier centennial, as it's fairly small and the dimensional proportions have a higher height in relation to the width of the building. A&P built smaller centennials during the life cycle of the design, but the proportions are more like earlier examples. The strip center appears to date to the centennial era, so it's unlikely a conversion from a pre-centennial store. Most smaller centennials were in small towns or a freestanding location near downtown in larger towns, while the competition was locating in the emerging strips. As a result A&P was still strong into the 80's and early 90's in Western North Carolina towns such as Sylva, Bryson City, Franklin and Murphy despite having closed all stores in Asheville, NC. They were more cutting edge in a small market and a laggard in larger markets.

Definitely a centennial and they built small ones (~ 13K sf) well into the late 60s.
