I stumbled upon this small chain while researching another chain. So I thought I would start a thread about it. Based out of Schenectady, NY, since the 1950's, they operated 18 stores in NY and VT when purchased by P&C Food Markets, Inc. in March, 1971. Saveway Markets, Inc. locations I found are (have not found all 18).

New York- Amsterdam(2), Glens Falls, Gloversville, Johnstown, Schenectady(8), Rotterdam, Cobleskill, Wynantskill, Saratoga Springs....but Troy and/or Colonie?

Vermont - Rutland

Add Saratoga Springs to the list. It has been since subdivided with Family Dollar being the largest user of the space. Amsterdam actually had two locations. One in a now vacant small (3-4 store) strip center within city limits and the other in a larger center out on NY Route 30 in the town of Amsterdam which once also housed a Big N department store. The town location is now where Alpin Haus (an RV dealer) is located. Both were converted to P+C I'm going to say sometime in 1972. The store in the town closed sometime later in the '70's and remained vacant for a number of years. The store within the city hung on until the mid '90's and I believe has been vacant ever since. I know the Johnstown and Gloversville stores very well as we used to shop there a lot over the years. I don't believe Johnstown was EVER updated interior-wise from the time P+C took over until they finally closed the store sometime in 1997. They too were both rebannered around the same time the Amsterdam stores were. Saveway opened there sometime in the mid '60's. As an aside, this store was located adjacent to Family Bargain Center. The Saveway/P+C space is now an Advance Auto Parts and a tanning salon. The Gloversville store opened probably around the same time and lasted as a P+C until 1999. Unlike Johnstown, P+C remodeled/updated the store at least twice that I know of including a total remodel and expansion in 1988. This store is now a Tractor Supply and a branch of One Main Financial after initially becoming a Staples for a few years after P+C closed.
