Two old Foodlands in the Pittsburgh area close

Post by Groceteria »

This one's particularly sad because I had planned to shoot pictures in both of these stores sometime this summer.

Beechview (1604 Broadway) was a former Thorofare dating from the 1940s, and Castle Shannon (300 Mt. Lebanon Blvd.) was a Kroger dating from the early 1950s. The latter still had some 1950s Kroger elements and some evidence of a 1970s remodel as well.

Looks like the store at 5821 Library Road, Bethel Park, not too far from Castle Shannon, is still open. (Not quite as visible via Street View as the closed two, since it doesn't face the street.)
