1. Newtown Square, PA (opened 1996, closed 2010, clone of Springfield store)

2. Glen Mills, PA (opened 1990, closed 2010, clone of Lansdale store)

3. Chesterbrook, PA (opened 1981, closed 2010)

4. Lansdale, PA (opened 1990, closed 2010, clone of Glen Mills store)

5. Voorhees, NJ (standard early 2000s prototype?, closed 2010)

6. East Windsor, NJ (standard early 2000s prototype, opened 2000, closed 2005?)

7. Bensalem, PA (standard early 2000s prototype, opened 2000, sold to ShopRite 2005?)

8. Wilmington, DE (opened 1999, converted to Safeway 2004?)

9. Exton, PA (opened 1985, closed 1991)

10. Bensalem, PA (Neshaminy Mall, opened 1983 in former Pathmark, closed 1997?)

11. Pottstown, PA (opened 1991 in former Pathmark, closed 2003?)

12. Pottstown, PA (not sure when opened/closed)

13. West Chester, PA (opened 1987, relocated 2003, clone of Lansdale/Glen Mills stores?)

Also note that Genuardi's grew the Zagara's chain for a few short years. Safeway closed the Jenkintown, PA Zagara's in 2000. The only others were in Glen Mills, PA as well as Marlton and Mt. Laurel in NJ. These closed around 2003 in that chain's bankruptcy.

It's official: the Feasterville and Warrington Genuardi's are being sold to Giant in the next few months.

There is a good story about this in yesterday's Bucks County Courier Times. Here is the link:

Also, the second Bensalem location (Bristol Road and Hulmeville Road) opened after the Neshaminy Mall location closed, and closed in the early 2000's. Shop Rite now occupies this location

The Warrington Genuardi's store was never a busy one. This store opened in 2001 around the time of the family sell-off (out), and was the last location that the Genuardi family had a part of. Wegmans opened across the road in 2006, pretty much killing off whatever business they had. The store also has no real visibility to the main road as it was built facing inwards to a complex of big-box stores (Target, Lowes). I stopped in this store yesterday and even with the 30% off discount they were running, things were still cheaper at other grocery stores. I really don't know why Giant wants this store...there is a Giant (older store, but has been remodeled and expanded) not even 2 miles up the road.

Feasterville opened in the mid-90's, and I remember it being real busy. Then their prices just became too high for the area (while Feasterville boarders some upper-middle class areas, it isn't that wealthy of an area to support such an overpriced store. This location would be a good fit for Giant. The nearest supermarket is an Acme almost across the road, and a Food Basics a little further from that.

I have a feeling Safeway is going to shut the whole chain down within the next few years...as the store count goes lower, it just doesn't make sense to operate them, given that the nearest real presence of Safeway is a few states away.

I have a suspicion. The Newtown Square/Edgmont/Marville store may have opened a full year ahead of the Springfield one from early 1996. Inside, these stores were almost "twins". That changed when the Springfield one was remodeled. The Marville one was smaller all along, and the roof looks very different in Google Maps/Bing/Historic Aerials.

Where was the Lansdale store in relation to the Weis? I remember them talking about closing one of the Lansdale Genuardi's stores back when I worked at Weis, but didn't know if it happened or which of the stores closed.

The Neshaminy mall location was closed when they opened the replacement store at Bristol & Hulmeville...

Also - Feasterville was a replacement store for an old old Genuardi's that was converted to a Mad Grocer at one point. They then closed that, bulldozed it, and built the new Genuardi's. That store was always pretty busy! The Acme across the street was actually a relo for an old store that was on the other side of the shopping center..

The Mad Grocer that was in Feasterville started as a Jewel T store that Genuardi's acquired after Jewel Companies wasacquired by American Stores Company. Also bulldozed in the same shopping center was the United Artists - Eric Feasterville 4 Theatre, which was in the center of the Feasterville Genuardi's/Giant

It was announced yesterday that the Eagleville Genuardi's will be closing on October 8 with the expiration of their lease. I wasn't aware of this but apparently Metro Self Storage opened in the former Kmart space not too long ago, so this is at least a smaller vacancy (although probably too small for another supermarket, except of course Bottom Dollar). Rumors continue to spread that Safeway is looking to sell off all the remaining Genuardi's, with other chains like Giant and Bottom Dollar picking and choosing which stores they want; another closure will get people talking about it again.

Even more Genuardi's news:
http://phoenixville.patch.com/articles/ ... to-8011221

The Phoenixville store will be closing on Oct. 15; the Rite Aid will also be closing (they of course refer to it as "moving", but really only the prescription files are moving). That shopping center opened I believe around 1991, so both stores likely had 20 year leases like the Lansdale stores last year, although in that case the Rite Aid is still there. Phoenixville is pretty competitive with stores; Giant and Redner's are right nearby on Nutt Rd/ Schuylkill Rd (Rt. 23), and Acme is a little bit further at the other end of town. The other Rite Aid was an Eckerd that relocated from across the street in 2008; Walgreens opened further into town in 2009, and CVS opened almost next to the new Rite Aid in 2010.

As far as the more persistent rumors of Safeway soon selling off all remaining stores, I found this post on topix.com:
http://www.topix.net/forum/city/lake-wa ... T1R0G8UBUJ

I don't know why exactly it was posted in a forum for Lake Waccamaw, NC (I found it doing a Google search), but it claims that the Springfield Genuardi's has been sold to Shop-Rite. There are of course no sources, so at this point it's completely unsubstantiated, but definitely possible (the current rumor has Giant buying the bulk of the stores, but they probably wouldn't want this one due to it's proximity to their Sproul Rd and Aldan stores). The person also claims that Giant would hire all new employees; that's not necessarily true if they just do a quick reset like they did with Clemens. In the cases of Feasterville and Warrington they were closed for six months.

Corporate stupidity at it's finest. It is amazing how Safeway can KILL a great company within the space of 10 years.!

Take a great, family owned and operated business, with a great product, integrate your crap programs and products, and, voila, you have failure!

It looks as if Safeway will take a loss of about $400 million on the deal, they purchased them for $530m in 2000, sold what was left for $106m, plus whatever they lost by mismanaging the company...

All,

Please remember to keep this topic focused on the closings in historical perspective. As always, posts that deal with current operations and strategies, etc. are off-topic here. For that sort of discussion, please keep Retail Watchers in mind.

Thanks,
