A&P in Delaware

Post by Ephrata1966 »

I think the only current new-build Super Fresh in Delaware is the one on Philadelphia Pike in Claymont. But there were all these A&Ps:

1. Wilmington, 202 and Silverside Roads (Centennial, was Super Fresh?, later Showbiz Pizza, now Chuck E. Cheese's and Dollar Tree)

2. Wilmington, Silverside and Marsh Roads (Centennial, enlarged, now Super Fresh)

3. Wilmington, Miller Road (Centennial, was Super Fresh?, then Dollar Tree, now Dollar Tree DEAL$)

4. Newark (Centennial, now Super Fresh)

5. Newark (Centennial, now Zingo's Great Valu)

6. Newark (started with barrel roof circa 1951, made small Centennial circa 1959, now Toyota dealership)

7. New Castle (circa 1976 store?, now Super Fresh)

8. Wilmington/Newport (Centennial, became Super Fresh, moved to new Super Fresh circa 1992?, closed 2002?, demolished, lot is still empty)

9. Claymont (became Super Fresh, moved to new Super Fresh early 2000s?)

10. Wilmington, Kirkwood Highway (Centennial, now Goodwill)

11. Wilmington, Merchants Square?

12. Smyrna (circa 1976 store?, was Super Fresh, now Roses general store?)

13. Wilmington (PLUS store, was Acme A Frame, now Total Wine?)

Hi, A&P had two stores in Newport on Maryland Avenue the colonial that is a goodwill store. Itsreplacement across the street and down the road never was a Super Fresh. It became the original Shop Rite in Newport. After the replacement store was opened it became a Union Hall
and was demolised.
A&P had a down town Newark unit that became a Happy Harry!s for many years it was located at 14 West Main Street. A&P had another Bear area store located on Route 72 in the Caldor Shopping Center. The Acmes in Bear and Elkton Road killed it. It was torn down after a long run as A Super Fresh.
Smyrna had three A&Ps one of a side street ffrom the down town area a 1940!s unit now a good will store. It was replaced by a second store located at the end of the Acme Shoping center after about ten years they move to the Roses location.
Middletown
has had at least two stores the original A&P on Main Street and is now a
day Care center built in the 40!s. The second store was in the Middletown Shopping Center
and for many years was Parkers Thriftway and is now a Sears Store. Dover had one at the route 13 south turn off a centenial it never became a Super Fresh. The currently have a Super Fresh Future Store on Route 10 in Dover.
They have a Super Fresh on Route 14 in Milford that was the last Safeway built in Delaware and only lasted a few months before the chain pulled out of the state, The original
A&P in the downtown area of Milford was a colinal and was the towns original Savalot.

Hi, One more for your closed Acme List they had a small A Frame now a goodwill store of off the downtown area. This closed when the replacement store was built on the Highway.
A&P had a store in Seaford in the Nylon Shopping center that became a Cooks Thriftway
for many years and was converted to a Farm Fresh for a few years
. Lewis had at least four A&Ps a downtown location that has become a seasonaly run IGA for at least twenty years. They built a new Super Fresh opperated it for about 15 years on the south bound lane of Route1. They built a replacement store in a newer shopingCenter a little further down the road from the original ( I can!t think of centers names). They also ran an
A&P on route 1 Northbound Lane that was run by A&P Baltimore( A fifties colonial a verry small store) untill the Super Fresh moved into its newest location. Thsi store was the last A&P to close in the state about 1995.
Other A&P locations were : Route 113 Milsboro never a SuperFresh/ Georgetown downtown
3rd and Union Streets wilmington
28th@ market Streets Wilmington
Delaware avenue & Jackson Street wilmington
