Super Fresh to Close Five Stores on The Delmarva Penninsular

Post by maynesG »

HI, According to the Baltmore Sun A&P will shutter and sell five eastern shore of Maryland and Delaware based Super Fresh stores this spring. The stores will liquidate and close by mid May. The company will then try to sell the buildings. ( the article said that the company will close 15 other units in Maryland ans D.C.) The eastern Shore stores are Chestertown ,Cambirdge, Salisbury, Dover De and Milford DE. Historically, all of these towns have had and A&P since the late 20!s and in the case of the MIilford and Cambridge stores, they were the last new stores built by Safeway in the mid 80!s, before they left the area the first time around. Both of those stores replaced Super Fresh stores that were old colonials. The closings will not effect the two units in Ocean City or Rehoboth or any of the stores in Northern New Castle County, including the two colonials in New City and Newark.

I just have to give the Chestertown Acme credit for that Super Fresh closing. That Acme is one of no less than six A Frames still operating in all four states in Acme territory! The rest are as follows:

1. Upper Darby (Drexel Hill?) PA, heavily remodeled/expanded

2. Clayton, NJ (most original)

3. Cape May, NJ (ironically given a "new" 50's style remodel)

4. Ocean City, NJ (competes with a huge beautiful Super Fresh)

5. Trolley Square, Wilmington, DE (one of the very first built and first remodeled)

Hi I worked as a department head at the Chestertown Acme when it had its last renovation. Over the years it has expanded into small stores to its rigth and to lts left added a Bakery and Produce wing as well as and Iced Seafood Case. In its last Renovation the Meat Room was cut down and a new Butcher Block, along with a new Deli was added. The rent is cheap and the store is profitable.
Who knows, they have spoke about building a replacement store in the same lot, just like Smyrna for many years, but the town fathers will not let another store in town ( battle to keep Walmart out of town). The landlord is the same for both shopping centers and Acme was offered the Super Fresh site before it was built many years ago. How Ironic it would be if Acme moved into the Super Fresh site and converted the A Frame into a SavA Lot. The A Frame wasa neet store to work in and I am glad that I had a chance to do so.

Hi, Yes the store had the Glass Food Art. The Super Fresh was opened in the early 90!s. It replaced a Colonial that was located south of washington college on Washington Avenue.
