November 1974: Thanksgiving shopping 40 years ago featured amazingly low prices

From the Buffalo (NY) News http://history.buffalonews.com/2014/11/ ... years-ago/

Ads include:

A&P WEO
Acme Super Saver
B-Kwik
Bells
Loblaws
Park Edge
Super Duper
Tops Friendly Markets
Twin Fair

Most have store locations, but in some cases do not list all of stores in the chain (Acme & Twin Fair)

Out the list above, the only chain still in business in Western New York State is Tops Friendly Markets.

Was the B-Kwik connected to Tops? Seems to show quite a few Tops branded items. Perhaps that was an early part of their "convenience stores" chain that they had until not too long ago when they sold to 7/11)?

A&P and Acme are probably the only two other chains still in existence (not in that area, but others), except for Loblaws still being in Canada.

Also there was (and still is) a small Acme chain in Ohio (Akron area is their base) that is not connected to the more known Acme that was in these ads.

B-Kwik was the franchised / Small format version of Tops Friendly Markets. Even though they were supplied by the same organization, Niagara Frontier Services, that supplied Tops and B-Kwik, Wilson Farms Convienece Stores were a separate division of the company. Wilson Farms was spun off after the Ahold issues to the founders of Tops, spruced up, expanded, and then sold in total to 7-Eleven. Wilson Farms stores were converted to 7-Eleven outlets.

I believe A&P pulled out of the market in 1975 and Acme left in 1979. Loblaws closed their locations in 1976/1977 in Western New York State and some locations became Bells Supermarkets.
