It looks like Albers never had the level of penetration that they did in Columbus & Cincinnati which may account for Big Star, esp. if one of the local chains like Liberal or Stumps was price sensitive. I wonder if 1965 was when they also began to cut back on their hinterland too. They had stores in Portsmouth, Fremont (where they co-anchored a shopping center with Cleveland's Fisher Foods), and Lima that were gone by the late 60s.

I think that's as good an explanation as any. It's also interesting to see how Dayton chains gave Kroger more of a run for its money than in many other parts of Ohio.

Kroger's dominance in Columbus & Toledo is pretty recent---both had much more dominant local chains. They were never really competitive in the Cleveland area and did only somewhat better in Akron/Canton & Warren/Youngstown. I'm guessing that Colonial squandered Albers competitiveness in Cincinnati & Columbus---they didn't invest in their stores in those places.
