History of Albertsons (pre ASC and SuperValu)

Post by socalgrocer »

According to the website Cruisecloseouts.com which has a timeline of the historical developments of major grocery chains across the nation, it said that in 1959, Albertsons not only their few hundred food stores but also:

- 5 drug stores
- 1 department stores

Some news articles that discussed the ASC merger thought that Savon/Osco was the company's first entry into the standalone drug store business but apparently that was wrong.

To correct that here is the approximate order of Albertsons's drug/pharmacy operations:

first entry - acquisition of 5 drug stores in the 1950's
second entry - Skaggs-Albertsons banner in the 1960's/70's
This probably led to the development of "Albertsons Food
Drug" and Albertsons having their own in-store pharmacies
along with "Max Food and Drug"
third entry - 1998 American Stores merger, which added Savon, Osco,
Lucky Pharmacy, Savon Pharmacy inside Lucky, Acme
Pharmacy Dept, Health n Home standalone stores,
netrefill.com, and RXAmerica.

Note American Stores dissolved Buttrey's Pharmacy and Alpha Beta's HY-LO drug chain.

What were the banner names of the drugstores that made up Albertsons's first drug division and also the name of their one department store?

Skaggs-Albertsons was not a standalone drug store. Skaggs and Albertsons had a partnership where Albersons supplied one half of the store (grocery) and Skaggs supplied the other (GM/Pharmacy). It was through this partnership that the Albertsons we all know came from. Skaggs was a standalone drugstore long before, and for quite some time after that partnership. Most of the Skaggs-Albertsons stores were renamed Skaggs-Alpha Beta.

I meant Skaggs pharmacies inside Albertsons during the partnership.

An article on the front page of the Feb. 14, 1952 Chronicle detailed the grand opening. The store was owned by the C.C. Anderson Co., which operated locations under the Golden Rule, Everybody's, and Idaho Department Stores banners in Oregon and Idaho. Anderson leased the basement space from Joe Albertson.
