A&P Files for Chapter 11

Post by rich » 12 Dec 2010 23:51

the debt they piled up buying Pathmark appears to have the major culprit. They also have supply chain problems as a consequence of contracting out to C&S.

Sad. The news sets a new skew on this thread, I must say...
"The pale pastels which have been featured in most food stores during the past 20 years are no longer in tune with the mood of the 1970s."

I don't think this will be the end of A&P for a long shot. They pay leases on over 70 closed stores. Getting rid of those leases will save lots of money. They have more retired employees than active. I imagine they will cut or elimintate their pensions like the airlines did when they went bankrupt. The bankruptcy will go a long way towards elininating many of their legacy costs and either a) make them a stronger company post-BK or 2) a more attractive prospect for selling the company.

A reminder to all: posts and particularly speculation about current operations of chains are off-topic here. Feel free to discuss issues surrounding A&P in historical perspective here, but if your post is primarily about current operations, click here for an approriate message board.

Posts that are exclusively about current operations with no historical tie-in will be deleted without comment.

Thanks,
David
