the debt they piled up buying Pathmark appears to have the major culprit. They also have supply chain problems as a consequence of contracting out to C&S.

I don't think this will be the end of A&P for a long shot. They pay leases on over 70 closed stores. Getting rid of those leases will save lots of money. They have more retired employees than active. I imagine they will cut or elimintate their pensions like the airlines did when they went bankrupt. The bankruptcy will go a long way towards elininating many of their legacy costs and either a) make them a stronger company post-BK or 2) a more attractive prospect for selling the company.
