I just learned about a 1972 book that analyzes commercial architecture in Las Vegas, including supermarkets. Learning from Las Vegas is by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and Steven Izenour. I just saw an oblique reference to it in a Los Angeles Times article by architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne. See:

See Mr. Hawthorne's blog article on a 2010 exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Act in Los Angeles about the creation of "Learning from Las Vegas": http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culture ... brown.html

Mr. Hawthorne wrote: "The now-canonical book helped accelerate the profession's move away from the self-importance of postwar modern architecture and toward a new interest in ornament, history and, perhaps above all, a pop sensibility."
