Here in Michigan, we had a chain called Carter's that took a lot of Kroger and IGA locations. Ours in Oscoda was an A&P, and I also shopped at the Tawas City one which used to be a Kroger.

I think I also went into Flint's Hamady chain at least once. Two near my aunt's house became A&P for about a year, then Save-a-Lot. (Actually, some of the Krogers in North and West Michigan were Hamady for about 3 years, including Tawas City.)

Oh yeah, and then there are the A&Ps and Farmer Jack. I shopped here in Oscoda at A&P, and at a store near my grandmother's in Grand Blanc both as A&P and Farmer Jack.

There was also Kessel Foods of Saginaw, mainly composed of old Kroger locations. Some were also Giantway. Most of them have gone back to Kroger, including some of the old Giantways.

And finally, Giantway itself. They had a huge store in East Tawas, 1/3 of which is still vacant 15 years later.

Here in Iowa we used to have Eagle Food Stores / Eagle Country Market. That chain is pretty much all gone now. The only two Eagle Country Market Stores left, but they are owned by a different company.

We used to have a number of Econofoods here in Iowa as well. They used to have a number of stores here in Iowa but they pulled out of Iowa and several other states a few years back. I can remember going there on Saturdays with my mom, grandma, and my aunts and making the rounds of all the samples. They went going strong for quite a while and even expanded the Dubuque store. When they first started they were 24 hours, eventually they limited their hours. I think they just couldn't keep up with Hy-Vee and Wal-Mart.

QFI, Cala Foods, Bell Markets (all the ex-Yucaipa/Ralphs-operated chains in the SF Bay Area) - went to the QFI in South San Francisco when it was that and later Bell Market; went to the Cala locations in Daly City (Skyline Plaza - now 99 Ranch Market; Mission Street - originally was a Bell Market) and two in San Francisco (Geary Boulevard - now Grocery Outlet; Hyde & California - now CVS & Trader Joe's)

Petrini's at Stonestown (now Sports Authority; was Borders Books for years before that)

I guess to some degree Albertsons in Northern California counts (with the Sacramento locations becoming Save Mart and the Bay Area ones either generally reverting to Lucky (under Save Mart ownership) or becoming Lucky for the first time)

I went to a Ralphs in the Sacramento suburb of Carmichael about a decade ago, at Marconi/Walnut; it later became an independent grocery store but has since gone empty.
