Safeway decor motifs, past and present

Post by TheStranger »

After my post of that now-closed Canadian Safeway with the early 1990s decor, I got to thinking...what are all the different decor types Safeway has sported over the years?

Here's the ones I can think of.

1950s-1960s (Pylon to early marina era): sans-serif font, colored walls. One of the best examples of this has to be the now-demolished marina in Lethbridge, AB.

Here's one off of this site's Safeway 1960s page:

The Marina Boulevard Safeway in San Francisco opened with a unique look inside:

EDIT, 1/18/07: The latest front page update of Groceteria shows this decor quite nicely.

Mid-1960s (mid-marina era): large serif font text, still colored walls. The photo that was just posted up on Groceteria's front page shows a Visalia, CA marina using that decor as of its 1982 closing:
http://www.groceteria.com/journal/2007/01.html#010407

The Marina Food marina on Monterey Road in San Jose presently has this, though comparing the photos that Charles, Justin and I got there with the Visalia photo, the wall colors are not original. (That location closed as a Safeway some time in the late 1980s.)

At one point, the Safeway on Grand Avenue in Oakland had a version of this, with painted on text underneath the original lettering:

Though no longer sporting this decor package, the former Safeway on 3845 Marysville Boulevard in Sacramento's Del Paso Heights neighborhood still uses the aisle hangers from this era:

Late 1960s (late marina era to early shakeroof era): white walls, colored serif (typewriter-like) text with smaller font size. DCGrocery recently posted photos of a closed Safeway near him (which he had mentioned on this board before) which used that decor for its entire life:

The Almaden Road Safeway in San Jose's Willow Glen neighborhood has a very modern exterior now, but still has the 1960s lettering (all repainted in red):

The usage of Circle S logos in the decor, more common in the late 1950s/early 1960s motif, occurred in the Pollock Pines gable:
http://www.groceteria.com/safeway/slide ... ck/01.html

Late 1960s-mid 1970s: Hybrid of colored walls and smaller, 1968-era text. The CentroMart pylon ex-Safeway in Stockton sports this:
http://www.groceteria.com/safeway/slide ... er/01.html
The Fresno marina operating now as Ventura Market once had this, but according to Storewanderer, has been extensively remodeled inside:
http://www.groceteria.com/safeway/slide ... ra/01.html

EDIT, 1/18/07 - This scan from the June 1974 edition of Chain Store Age (page M7) shows that the decor variant was used at least into the middle of the Seventies:

From that same article, here's a photo showing the Circle S logos being incorporated into the decor and the 1968-era abstract designs:

Early 1980s: Italicized non-serif, red lettering. White walls still. Can be seen as late as 1985, when it popped up in a Safeway ad in this newscast 2 minutes in (link courtesy of Terry K):

The 7th Avenue marina in San Francisco (near Golden Gate Park) still has this look, which came from the only time it was ever remodeled inside:

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1228/dcfc0028.jpg

Early 1980s: A colored-letter take on the italicized non-serif lettering, with some abstract wall graphics. Terry K tells me he has seen this variant at the location in Sidney, NE.
http://www.groceteria.com/safeway/slide ... rs/04.html

Mid-1980s: Marketplace. Wall graphics galore with neon lighting. The Safeway in Burlingame, CA (a 1950s pylon) still sports this package:

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1217/dcfc0030.jpg
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1217/dcfc0031.jpg

Mid-1980s: "Art Deco." The gray-red-white motif was established then, but used a sans-serif "art deco" font was used. The Safeway in Monterey, CA which recently closed had this at the end.

In San Francisco, the 1972-era Monterey Boulevard location actively uses this decor package.
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1127/dcfc0051.jpg

A more elaborate take on this can be found in Menlo Park, where the Safeway on El Camino Real uses this font for its wall lettering - but lighted up by neon.
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/menlo.htm
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1229/dcfc0297.jpg
Other lettering retains the more common color scheme of the time.
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1229/dcfc0300.jpg

Mid-1980s: hybrid of art deco color scheme and italicized sans-serif font. This is the decor package currently at the Chestnut Avenue store in South San Francisco, CA.
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/ssf.htm
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/dcfc0341.jpg

Late-1980s: cheap painted on wall lettering. Two stores I know of have this, the former White Front supermarket in South San Francisco, and the late-1960s Safeway on Delaware Street in San Mateo.

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1217/dcfc0048.jpg

In all 1980s variants, pentagon-shaped aisle hangers (with photo) were used. Here's one without a photo in Menlo Park:

Another with a photo at the Delaware Street location in San Mateo.
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1217/dcfc0043.jpg
And, here's two that have been repainted white, but still with photo, at Marina Food in San Jose:
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1229/dcfc0112.jpg
Marina Food has also used their own text slotting:
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1229/dcfc0109.jpg

Early 1990s: "Food Barn." Terry K gave that look the moniker, because he thinks it was used for that concept (with the more industrial ceiling to boot). Found in Surrey, BC.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/paradigm4/339246872/

1990s: serif font returns, colorful department labeling with still white walls, an evolution of the above "Food Barn" look. Very common in the Bay Area even now, most notably at the flagship marina store on Market and Duboce in San Francisco. New aisle hanger font/style also developed at this time.
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores2/dcfc0023.jpg

Falsefronted marina in Pinole, CA also has the 1990s decor package, with an aisle hanger style from earlier in the decade:
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/pinole.htm
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1127/dcfc0079.jpg

Deli section in the Daly City (Westlake) location shows one font variant:
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/dc.htm
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/dcfc0025.jpg

The most common font variant:
http://www.groceteria.com/safeway/slide ... age/02.jpg

Late 1990s to early 2000s: I call this "pre-Lifestyle," as it shares some of the characteristics of the Lifestyle decor (brownish walls) while retaining the 1990s fonts, this time using the aisle hanger font on the walls.
One example is at the Safeway on Jackson Street in San Francisco.
http://www.groceteria.com/safeway/slide ... age/05.jpg
Another is the marina in San Rafael, CA.

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores2/102/dcfc0004.jpg
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores2/102/dcfc0011.jpg
Aisle hanger background went from red to black at this time.
http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores2/102/dcfc0006.jpg

2005 to late 2006: Lifestyle (era 1). Tan decor, lowercase text in same font as 1997-2006 aisle hanger text, some places use oval-shaped picture decor just like in the pre-Lifestyle motif, though with a beige (rather than black) border.
Marina Boulevard currently sports this:

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/1231/dcfc0006.jpg

late 2006 to present: Lifestyle (era 2). Very different font for wall text, along with new aisle hangers, new hangers coming in around November (with the Martinez marina remodel). Square, rather than oval, photo decor in place as well.

3350 Mission Street in SF (remodel from September to November 2006) has the wall text:

Rancho Cordova (in process of being remodeled in February 2007) will have this motif as well:

The Martinez aisle hanger (blurry view):

I don't know that I would say "extensively remodeled." The alterations that were done to the Ventura were to replace the aisle hangers and remove the gondola shelving in favor of ugly "warehouse" shelving. (I was just in there this afternoon) The Safeway decor is still present on the walls, and the floor is the original 60's floor. If that store were to be cleaned up and the gondola shelving replaced it would still be quite attractive.

Here's a nice shot of a Safeway interior in London in 1974, not only showing the wall lettering that was used both there and in the States at the time, but also the aisle hanger style (and plastic bag style) from then.
