In December I went into about 4 Reams in Utah. Based on my observations, they are the weakest of the group there in that market. Most single store independents look stronger. These observations included their staffing, store appearance, product mix, pricing, and cleanliness. While I did like the old fashioned feel of the stores and the odd amount of banners and handwritten signage present, combined with the lack of perimeter departments yet presence of western clothing in some stores, the lack of customers in their stores said it all.

I've been by there on visits to Provo, but haven't ever been in. My brother who lives there never shopped there because the store had something of a bad reputation, although I'm not sure exactly why. Perhaps more interesting than this Ream's store is the former "Ream's Turtle" store in Provo that was built inside a monolithic concrete dome formed by building the structure over a mound of dirt, then digging the dirt out from under it. This was originally constructed for an ice skating rink in 1963, but became a Ream's store in 1967. and remained until the structure was demolished in 2006 (not without some drama, as the article linked above details.)
