Since Adobe Acrobat can be annoying in terms of hogging memory, I've decided to screenshot the photo from the PDF and put it up here:

That Helena, MT Safeway Marina appears to have a mansard roof lining, that which I don't believe was part of the original 1960s construction (but was added on sometime from the early 1970s up to 1981). Correct?

I'm assuming it's a mid-70s addon (judging from the style of Safeway lettering), but I've never seen a store with that sort of lining.

In fact, despite the very first marina having letters offset from the glass front by about a foot (using metal attachments), very few marina stores went with the approach of putting the letters a few feet front of the actual facade.

The only other two I can think of are recent remodels: Lake Oswego, OR and the Eastgate/150th store in Bellevue, WA.

Using it, I found some decent results:

Got a new scanner today, and YOU reap the benefits.

Cedar Hills Safeway, Portland. I took this, oh, probably around 1995. It anchored the Cedar Hills Shopping Center. The look in the image was from an early 1970's remodel. Aside from painting the interior department graphic backgrounds to a universal color (red), the store didn't receive another update until it closed.

It became a short-lived Thriftway (who did an extensive remodel), and today is a Big Lots.

This was my grandmother's regular Safeway through the seventies. I saw a lot of this store in my youth.

Hey, thanks for that scanned photo (as well as the photo of the Des Moines marina operating as Hy-Vee) :)

Here's a Live Local shot of this pylon/box store, now operating as Big Lots:

Say! I found another picture of Cedar Hills.

The pylon looks washed out in the real image too. The sun was hitting it.

If anyone has any views of the original Safeway in Milwaukie, OR (10554 SE Main Street) prior to 1967, I would like to see them.

Thank you,

About the Safeway in White Center near Seattle. It was opened in October 1981 as a Safeway Super Store. It was one of the last Safeways in the Seattle area to be opened with the Circle S logo. Also when it opened, it had the photo/variety Service center counter and a bake shop. But it seems that Safeway was slow to install in-store delis until the late 1980's. This store eventually received a remodel about 1990 when it finally received a deli. This remodel had the grey backgound with the white letters. The final remodel happed about the late 1990's. This was the second to the last decor scheme before the "lifestyle" remodels. In fact, Safeway was about to remodel or expand this store about 2000 or 2001 about the time Kroger put up the nearby Roxbury Fred Meyer Marketplace up for sale. Now the only full line supermarket in the main White Center Business district is Albertsons. For a view of that store go to the entry about non Safeway marina stores.

What was the last Safeway location to open in all Portland, OR that had the old "Circle S/S Medallion" logo?

1970s Oregon location, not sure exactly where:

http://s29.photobucket.com/albums/c285/ ... C01585.jpg

Here's a location I THINK somewhere in the Seattle area (the person who put this up has a Seattle image collection) with 1970s lettering, possible pylon-era store, and I keep thinking I've put a link to this one before here:

http://s65.photobucket.com/albums/h236/ ... 65aab5.jpg

I think this is the store in Astoria, OR:

http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l256/ ... 010182.jpg

---

Speaking of the Cedar Hills store and its pylon, those photos actually tie in nicely with one of Roadsidepictures' shots, of a Safeway sewing needle package from the 1950s:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/54177448@N00/111718090/

The design similarity between that and the Cedar Hills pylon is striking...as Roadsidepictures himself noted...
It's a flat parallelogram...I believe Safeway made it look like the pylon sign they used at the time.
I haven't seen another photo of a store with that pylon text-and-logo arrangement though...

---

Earlier, I mentioned a closed Marina on 540 Pacific Boulevard, "somewhere in Oregon", which had an photo up on Google Images...

Here's the Google Maps overhead of it, apparently still sadly abandoned. It's in Albany, OR, on Route 99E (the former US highway).

Safeway in Priest Lake, Idaho.

Urban store in Seattle:

GREAT angle shot of the downtown Bellevue marina on 4th and Bellevue Way:

---

former Safeway mentioned here:

Where: Anchorage Performing Arts Center, or at the old Safeway building (12000 Business Boulevard) in Eagle River.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q ... 4&t=h&om=1

- in Portland, the future site of a lifestyle Safeway, at SE 42nd and King:

Beautiful night shot of a closed marina somewhere in Oregon, anyone know exactly where this location is?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/morsteen/267387299/

The appearance of this particular specimen (with the angled side walls and the rising, curved marina wings) is very similar to the Fulton Avenue store in Sacramento (now Tognotti's).

Here's a shot of the front entrance to the two-story Safeway in Portland:
http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/13 ... 3719oHOXRi

Meanwhile, I wonder if the gable in one of the earlier posts in this thread, from Leavenworth, WA, got remodeled into this:
http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/13 ... 3875HuUNMF

Here's an interior of a marina in Puyallup, WA:
http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/11 ... 3107rGQyav

Judging from this Live Local overhead, it seems to be the location at 611 S Meridian:

Here's a similar structure in Fort Collins, CO (currently GART Sports) so untouched on the exterior that the holes in the side of the building for the "S A F E W A Y" letters (you can see the sign space at the very right of the shot just at the tree) are still visible.

I don't think the side walls are angled, though. (Or on the Oregon one).

(Picture taken in 2004 and was previously posted by me on the old board)

Safeway moved into a horrificaly ugly building across the street.

Hmm - for comparison, here's a shot of Tognotti's which I have posted before:

In all those cases it may just be the camera perspective that's fooling me into thinking the side walls angle out.

Now in that case, I agree...it does look like the walls angle.

But I suspect it's actually the angle the picture was taken at.

Did I mention I love the winged Safeways? Yes? No? Okay.

Don't worry, I'm also a bit of a marina fanatic. :D

Hey, curious: Have you gotten a shot of the old marina in Arvada? It'd be more in scope with the Denver thread...
