The San Francisco Chronicle ran a big story on August 1, 2011 about Safeway supermarket construction and renovation projects and their related controversies in the San Francisco Bay Area. The story included discussion about the "Rockridge" Safeway store at College & Claremont in north Oakland, near the Oakland/Berkeley city boundary. See:

The Berkeley Safeway store (on Shattuck Avenue) will be substantially remodeled in August or September 2011, reports an employee. This is a "Marina" style store that has not yet received the "lifestyle" upgrade. It still has the second-story office at the back of the store. Bright fluorescent lights still hang high in the Marina-style arch. There still is some mosaic tile along the front of the store. A giant Safeway "S" logo from the 1980s (?) hangs outside. It has "magic carpet" style doors that swing outwards.

The Oakland Planning Commission has approved the replacement of the College Ave. & Claremont Ave. (Rockridge district) "Marina Style" Safeway store with a large new building. See the story in the July 30, 2012 issue of the Daily Californian, the U.C. Berkeley student newspaper:

One source says there is a 2.1 acre lot there. The current store covers 30% of it; the new store would cover 90%. The old "Marina Style" store is around 24,000 square feet.

I have posted photos from 2011 of the interior and exterior of the "Marina style" Safeway supermarket on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, California:

These photos were taken in August 2011. I believe that the remodeling project on that store is now complete.

The Safeway Marina-style store on the Oakland/Berkeley border (College at Claremont) has been demolished. Demolition happened sometime between mid-March 2013 and mid-August 2013. Construction is underway on the replacement store.
