Brooklyn & Ford Market, East Los Angeles

Post by bigbubby »

Anybody ever been to this store? My third-hand guess is that it dates to the 1940s, at the latest. I'm wondering what this was in a previous life. The current name refers to it's location, at the corner of what was Brooklyn (now Cesar E. Chavez) Avenue and Ford Boulevard. (Just east of the 710 Long Beach Freeway)

Maybe Fox Markets?

Their headquarters were in East Los Angeles.

So might an exact address, or what's in there now to help look up the street address.

Yer Humble Host to the rescue. The aerial shot is from Terraserver and the front shot is from A9. It's amazing how I can visit an intersection in LA without leaving my desktop in Charlotte, isn't it?

Brooklyn Avenue is now called Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, which is why it took me a while. The address is officially 4500 E Cesar E Chavez Ave.

Of course, the photo doesn't tell me much. It looks like a pretty standard 1920s-30s streetcar strip, so this could have been just about anything.

I'll check the Polk City Directories since I live in LA anyway.

Thanks.

I drive by it everyday. Its been the brooklyn-ford market for all i can remember. It was remodeled in the 90s around the time they renamed Brooklyn. This area of LA back in the 40's used to be a largely Jewish neighborhood before they moved to the Fairfax district.

It was called the Brooklyn Food Market back in the late '50's. By 1971 it was a Mens Turkish Bath.
Info comes from the LA Times dated Feb. 14, 1957 and Nov. 10, 1971.
