I'm heading to this neighborhood soon

North side of Slauson, between Overhill and Angeles Vista, Windsor Hills district.

It still exists, complete with pylon (possible labelscar also), as does the curvy former Thrifty on the corner. Streetview shows a copy shop in the Thrifty and a storage facility in the Mayfair.

This is the neighborhood my Dad grew up in. My Grandparents lived for over 30 years just a few streets up the hill from this market, and I remember going there with my Grandmother back in the late fifties/early sixties.

I'll be going there later this month, with camera. If anyone's interested in a pic, let me know.

Hello,

I love seeing split screen "then and now" views of older buildings and think it would be a great project if you could take a photo of the shopping center looking in the same direction as the black and white photo shows. Let us know it goes!

The main tenant there was several different grocery stores over time...a Mayfair, then Fox, then an independent - Dobsons. It's now a Self Storage place. I also remember walking here with grandma who lived on Overdale. There was a cool shopping arcade that had a liquor store on the Slauson side. At the west end was a SoCal chain of ice cream shops and the sign in the shape of a cone was still there for many years.

As that neighborhood has seen some rejuvenation in recent years it would be nice to see this gem of a shopping center (still with its moderne bones) brought back to life - maybe with a trader Joes or Whole Foods. The old grocery store is smallish - about the size of the old Vons that recently closed on La Tijera.
