Russell's Supermarket Chain-Northern California-1960s

Post by Jason B. »

There was a supermarket chain named "Russell's" that operated in the San Francisco Bay Area (and perhaps beyond) in the 1960s. The Daily Review (Hayward, Calif.) reported on December 13, 1962 that a new "Russell's" store was celebrating its grand opening in the shopping center at "B" Street and Vermont in Hayward. The newspaper item says that this Hayward location was the 11th in the chain. The store was 18,000 square feet. Balloons and ice cream were highly-touted components of the grand opening celebration.

This store location became a supermarket yet again in 2009 when Grocery Outlet opened a store there. The shopping center, sadly, received high-profile news coverage in November 2009 when a father was senselessly murdered in front of his 13-year old daughter adjacent to the liquor center there.

A Taco Bell (with classic "Mission" architecture) was located in this center for many years. Today it is a non-chain (or small chain?) Mexican restaurant.
