Former 1940s Safeway Oakland, CA

5908 San Pablo Ave. Now an independent, Gateway Supermarket. Nice that it still has some of the original details, like the old sign lamps on the right wall;

This is a great find. Does anyone know if this building was constructed for Safeway? If so, there must be duplicates that survive around California. In Livermore, Safeway opened a store in 1937 at 1st and J streets. I think (but do not know) that the building was constructed to house the Safeway store, which replaced nearby Safeway and MacMarr stores. That building still stands as Valley Furniture. It appears to be similar to the building depicted on San Pablo Avenue in Oakland.

I'm so glad you like it. It looks a lot like this 1940s Safeway (from Pleasant Family Shopping), so it probably was built from the ground up;

Good observation. Here's a photo and a street view of Valley Furniture;

I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the Valley Furniture building kind of resembles this 1940s Safeway;

Both of those Safeways are part of this blog on Pleasant Family Shopping;

It looks like this store still has the wall decor from a 1960s remodel;
