Mayfair Locations-San Diego-1959

Post by Jason B. » 09 Feb 2011 02:31

The Thursday, November 12, 1959 edition of the San Diego Union contains many advertisements for supermarkets and grocery stores in the San Diego area. I will post information from each one separately.

Mayfair ran a two-page ad. Pork was the main special, "spareribs or smoked picnics," "your choice for only" 29 cents per pound. They also touted that they gave S&H Green Stamps. A slogan in the ad was “GROWING WITH SAN DIEGO.”

These were the Mayfair locations listed in the ad:
(1) "newest" at 58th & University, San Diego
(2) 1260 Garnet St, Pacific Beach
(3) 160 N. Magnolia Ave., El Cajon
(4) 3967 30th St, North Park
(5) 5075 Federal Blvd., San Diego
(6) 1000 E. 10th St., National City
(7) 7663 Broadway, Lemon Grove
(8) 540 Third Ave., Chula Vista
(9) 500 Broadway, Chula Vista
(10) 1186 E Main, El Cajon
(11) 3363 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego
(12) 4340 Moraga, Clair(e)mont

Are any of these Mayfair store buildings still in use today?

This one is still a super market and looks very similar to what it looked like as a Mayfair.

58th & University, San Diego: Now a Marshall's.

1260 Garnet St, Pacific Beach: Now a Henry's Marketplace.

160 N. Magnolia Ave., El Cajon: Now an Albertsons-Sav•on. This however, was a complete rebuild.

3967 30th St, North Park: Gone, now a bunch of "Urban Renewal" shops.

5075 Federal Blvd., San Diego: Now a Foodland, and yes, it looks original.

1000 E. 10th St., National City: Gone, looks like an office complex now.

7663 Broadway, Lemon Grove: Jo-Ann Fabrics.

540 Third Ave., Chula Vista: Gone, Now the site of the Third District Court and Jail.

500 Broadway, Chula Vista: Literally a couple streets from the Third Ave. location, I'm taking a stab and placing it as the building behind the Carl's Jr. but I can't make out what it is now.

1186 E Main, El Cajon: U-Haul center.

3363 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego: Centre Laundry. Still has the sign pylon.

4340 Moraga, Clairemont: Gone, looks like apartments now.
