A&P Super Markets had an advertisement in the San Diego Union of November 12, 1959. It touted the "100th Birthday Celebration" of "The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company" and "1859 America’s Dependable Food Merchant 1959".

Four locations were listed in the San Diego area:
(1) 54th and El Cajon – San Diego;
(2) 5th and Nutmeg – San Diego;
(3) 7829 Girard - La Jolla;
(4) 844 Orange Ave. - Coronado

The main promotion in the ad was for “Super-Right” Quality Cornish Cross Frying Chickens. U.S.D.A. Grade “A” whole bodied, 2½ to 3 lbs., for 29 cents per lb. The price for "split, quartered or cut up" was 31 cents per lb.

Who knew that A&P had a mini-empire in the southwestern corner of the country in the mid-20th century? Does anyone know if any chain took over these four stores from A&P?

A&P's prersence has been discussed in other threads. They were spread rather thinly across Southern California in contrast to the way they saturated many of their eastern markets.

Coronado... so that's what's next to the VONS store... I wonder if the A&P and Safeway were ever open at the same time? Store currently empty, don't know anything of the tenancy. Guessing it was a 40's style store by the size and architecture. (attached)

La Jolla: probably demolished, that side of the street looks 70's-80's to me.

5th & Nutmeg: either the Japanese restaurant or the empty lot. Definitely not the church, and the other location looks a tad too ornate for A&P.

54th and El Cajon: if it was on the street corner, it's long gone, otherwise there's an interesting barrel-roof store with a wedge-shaped pylon one parcel west of 54th on El Cajon Blvd. (attached)
