Lucky store on Lincoln Avenue in San Jose, CA

Post by GCH1136 » 10 Sep 2011 20:16

I moved to San Jose in 1967. I remember driving down Lincoln Avenue at that time where I was sure that I saw one of those Lucky concrete tower signs on the left side of the street going south. Was the old Lucky Store on Lincoln Avenue in the building that houses Kragen's(Changed names now) and a pizza parlor today? That is also on the left side of Lincoln Avenue going south. Someone else told me that the old Lucky Store used to be located on the left side going down Lincoln Avenue just south of Willow Street? I think that I am correct, but not positively sure? Does someone who knows Willow Glen really well and was living there before that time, remember where the Lucky Store was located on Lincoln Avenue? I think that the Lucky Store had closed before that time, but the old Lucky concrete tower was still there?

The Lucky's wasa bit further down; according to the 1964 San Jose / Santa Clara telephone directory, it was at 1140 Lincoln Ave. in what's now the Peet's / Petroglyph / Noah's building. It was gone by 1972.

Here's some of the other tidbits. I'm not listing all the grocery stores (and ignoring a bunch of mom-and-pop along Meridian Ave.), but I assume it'll still be interesting.

The 1964 San Jose / Santa Clara telephone directory at ancestry.com shows that Lucky had 6 stores:
Store #30: 1140 Lincoln Ave., San Jose (Peets/Petroglyph building)
Store #46: 182 E. Santa Clara
Store #59: 1305 N. Bascom Ave. (still there in 1972)
Store #71 14141 Story Road
Store #82: 2676 Homestead Rd., Santa Clara (still there in 1982)
Store #95: Tropicana Village Shopping Center.

The current Mi Pueblo at Coe was Lincoln Lane Groceries.
Avila's Super-duper Market was at 2585 Almaden Road.
Busy Bee Market was at 1912 Lincoln Ave.
Round Corner Market was at 2052 Lincoln Ave.
The Food Basket (S&E Food Basket) was at 2253 Lincoln Ave.
Mayfair was at Hamilton and Meridian (in what I assume is the 24 hour fitness.)
PW was at 1421 Foxworthy

By 1972, Mayfair was gone, and Albertson's was at 1530 Hamilton Ave.
Dick's Market was at 1400 S. Bascom, with its headquarters next door. They had 10 stores, but numbered up to #12.
Seven Eleven was *everywhere* in 1972.
Fry's was at 3075 Almaden Road, just across the river from Valley View Packing, in the space now occupied by Goodwill.
Lincoln Lane was now at both 2585 Almaden Road (in Avila's old space) and still at 1003 Lincoln Ave.
Purity had a store at 2680 Union Ave.

From Charles Hathaway's Flickr account, here's the Lucky at 182 E. Santa Clara. The building was originally a car dealership from the 1930s, and opened as a Lucky in the late 1940s or early '50s;

Lucky relocated to 277 E. Santa Clara in 1966, which closed as Albertson's in 2006.
