Slightly strange topic about Los Angeles grocery stores

So, I've recently started playing a game called L.A. Noire and it's set in 1940's Los Angeles. The streets are accurate as in real life. Even some places that still exists today are in the game. The game has many real name retailers in it at the time like The Broadway Hollywood, J.J. Newberry, Kress, etc. I am currently at a location (in the game) that shows a small "Safeway" off the corner of Las Palmas and Hollywood Blvd, more so on Las Palmas. I was wondering if a Safeway existed there at that time? If so, I'll be further traveling around the city in the game and in real life to visit some of these locations to get photos.

I know, way far fetched from what we usually discuss here, but if this game proves to be accurate, it would be a big help locating older stores.

You could probably research it by going to the LA public library and looking at phone books from that year or LA Times archives.
