I stumbled across this photo on Pinterest:

I wasn't aware there was ever a Safeway inside the Hollywoodland community (If you ever visit L.A. and want a good view of the Hollywood sign drive up Beachwood Drive from Franklin Ave. and you will arrive in this little community).

There is still a market operating there today called the Beachwood Market. Unfortunately they 'upgraded' the exterior in the 70's or 80's but from this view on Google Maps you can see it is the same building by looking at the roof.

Great photo. It's apparently from 1928, which looks right based on the building and signage. That location is not listed in the 1932 LA city directory, though. I wonder if it may have closed by then.

I wonder if the name of the street changed? That street is now Belden Drive.

This article shows Beachwood Market open in 1942 at 2699 Beachwood Drive which would place it right next to Safeway on the left.

Checked the street guide when I was looking back at the directory the other night and it seems the street names stayed consistent over that period. These older LA city directories don't have the "building by building" reverse index, though, just a list of the streets and cross-streets. But Belden and Beachwood seem to have stayed put.

The older ones for LA also don't list specific locations for Safeway like the ones from 1932 on, so I can't pinpoint when it opened. If it started out as a Sam Seelig store it could have been there a while. And short leases were not altogether uncommon in those days.

I'm curious now, though, so I'll try to do some more checking.
