When did the Vons meat plant close?

At one time in the early 1990s (and likely before), The Vons Cos. had a meat plant that did work for its own supermarkets (presumably) and some restaurant use (famously and infamously Jack in the Box). It was that meat plant that caused the initial trouble, and certainly hasn't existed for a long time, but did it close before or after Vons was acquired by Safeway, or was it sold?

I don't know the exact date unfortunately but it seemed like it was a year or two after the Jack in the Box incident.

Important information to keep in mind about that incident. Vons only ground the meat that Jack in the Box supplied. It was never mixed with Vons own meat but they suffered a drop in sales and profits anyways.

Was it more of Vons' financial issues (stemming from this, among others) or Safeway's ambitions that Safeway purchased the remaining two-thirds of Vons in 1997?

Vons financial performance had been mediocre for a while. This was just one of the causes. The failure of Omni, the Cesar Chavez arrest that caused Tianguis to eventually fail, the Jack in the Box incident, high overhead at corporate and probably the corporate culture at Vons in general all resulted in a company that's profit margin was a lot lower than Safeway's. Safeway pounced when they had the chance.

I was still working with Vons when a massive termination of employees took place at the Arcadia offices.

Over 130 salaried employees were terminated in one day.

It seems that everyone who had a friend on the Board was given an office, Secretary, car and a cell phone. They were greeted at the door by an armed guard and escorted to their office or desk and left to pack up their personal belongings then escorted from the building to a cab or their personally owned cars.

These were folks who had been store managers and supervisors but Safeway no longer wanted or lets say they could no longer justify their jobs.
