The fate of the nearly shuttered Palm Springs Mall on Tahquitz is now known, it will become a College of the Desert location. Those of us who have lived or traveled to the desert for years know that the Mall began a slow death in the early 2000's long before the recession. There was a Market Basket at this location that was acquired by Vons, eventually the store moved one space West next door, the pictures attached help describe. The Vons closed in the early 2000's, it was a low volume store albeit clean and well run, clerks who had checked since the 1970s. There was a sign on Sunrise by Rite Aid that said a new Vons store was coming but that did not come to fruition, I would assume the recession killed that opportunity. With the closure of the Vons in the Mall, and Jensens relocating to Smoke Tree, we can no longer walk to a store and have to drive to Ralphs or the giant Albertsons on Sunrise.
update on the old Vons store in Palm Springs, demolish en has began, only 3 walls remain, the old Market Basket grocery store that pre dated Vons adjacent will be gone soon as well along with the entire mall making way for the new College Of the Desert Palm Springs, on Tahquitz street
