A big discovery: 1976 Safeway California map!

Post by TheStranger »

While perusing my university's library, I discovered that they had in their collection a 1976 California roadmap from Gousha, with a twist: every one of the 550+ Safeway locations in the state at the time - both Norcal and SoCal - was marked down.

I've photocopied the map (not sure it is available for borrowing, otherwise I would think about scanning it in color at my place) and will do a thorough examination of its contents probably starting tonight; and later see if I can get Live Local shots of some of the San Diego/Greater Los Angeles/City of San Francisco locations mentioned that have not been covered yet in any form. (For those locations outside those three areas of the state, Googlemaps overheads will do, and some of the stores of course have already been covered on this site, my pages, and Charles Hathaway's.)

One twist is that as a relatively compact basic roadmap, the Safeways were not listed by address at all, but rather simply by the Circle S symbol and an arrow pointing to the general vicinity of the store on the map itself. As a result, once I start posting the list of locations I've gleaned from it, there will be instances I can only approximate where a store might be. Having said that, this will be a boon for finding previously undiscovered sites, especially in rural areas.

The entire state has its own map, of course (split in two because the map's size couldn't handle the entire state being presented lengthwise). Insets are as follows:

San Francisco Bay Area (northernmost extent is Petaluma, easternmost is Antioch and Livermore, southernmost is Monterey and Salinas)
Greater Los Angeles (northernmost extent is Newhall, westernmost extent is Malibu Beach, easternmost extent is Redlands or so - not sure how far the copier at the library covered, and southernmost extent is Capistrano Beach)
Palm Springs area (Beaumont east to Palm Desert)
San Diego (northernmost extent is La Jolla/Route 52, westernmost extent is Point Loma, southernmost extent is the southern Route 75/I-5 interchange, easternmost extent is La Cresta and Jamul)
Sacramento (westernmost extent is the current I-80/US 50 interchange in West Sacramento, southernmost extent is Mack Road, northernmost extent is McClellan AFB/interchange of I-80 and Business 80/secret Route 51, easternmost extent is Watt Avenue at Route 16)

Thanks for a blast from the past! I remember a similar map of Washington State with all the Safeways on it like you stated. I wish I still had this map. But this also showed locations in the parts of Idaho, Oregon and British Columbia that were visible on the map. But I thought that this map was dated from about 1979 or 80. I know that I was driving at the time I got the map and I started driving in 1978 and I know it had the circle S logo.

I was going to list out all the inset locations, but I thought it'd be much, much easier instead to simply scan my photocopies of the maps and then link them to you guys.

The map itself is actually in color, but I got only black and white photocopies which I then had to cut and paste in an image editor due to my scanner's small space. That shouldn't be an issue though.

I wasn't able to photocopy every square inch so here's some extra locations on there that I had missed...

SF Bay Area/Monterey-Salinas: Monterey (2 stores), Carmel, Pacific Grove, Gilroy (technically Gilroy is just outside the inset area, but has always been considered Bay Area)

Palm Springs section in Greater Los Angeles inset: Hemet (you can see the arrow pointing to it) around State Street/old Route 79 (County Route R3), Palm Springs (Ramon at Palm Canyon/old Route 111), Palm Desert (Route 74 at Route 111)

Greater Los Angeles inset: Capistrano Beach (you can see the arrow pointing to it still)

Without further ado...

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/197 ... 20list.jpg - list of cities with Safeway locations (on map cover), 1 MB - note that listing is not entirely accurate; some of the cities (i.e. Colma) did not have a store (and in Colma's case, that town has never even had a supermarket, only a Target and a KMart that no longer exists)

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/197 ... 20area.jpg - San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey/Salinas, 1.79 MB

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/197 ... ngeles.jpg - Greater Los Angeles, 2.77 MB

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/197 ... amento.jpg - Sacramento (and a portion of the main map in Northern California), 1.52 MB

http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/197 ... 0diego.jpg - San Diego, 477 KB

Wow, awesome.

Pasadena on Colorado and San Gabriel.....hmm....there is a Vons on Colorado and Altadena/Sierra Madre about a few blocks west of that.

Nothing ever east on Colorado.

Here are some from the Los Angeles Map:

City of San Fernando, San Fernando Road and San Fernando Mission-- Possibly this Valu+ Market, 315 San Fernando Mission Blvd
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=2989789

Sherman Way and Sepulveda--Big Lots, 7241 Sepulveda
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6751397

Sherman Way and Topanga Canyon--Big Lots, 21910 Sherman Way
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3099578

Hollywood Way and Victory--Probably the pylon Petco store, possibly the Smart & Final across the street. I think the Petco was a Silo before it was a Petco.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6763655

Lincoln and Rose, Venice--Big Lots, 225 Lincoln Blvd
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=510501

Centinela and Venice--a Super S store, now an Asian market.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=512325

Also another store at Centinela and Washington, now a Vons, 4030 Centinela Ave
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=536550

Culver City (Fox Hills)--now a Marshalls, 6221 Bristol Pkwy
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=544607

The Santa Monica store at Lincoln and Broadway (looks like Olympic on the map) was torn down in about 1993 and replaced with a new Vons. The store had faced Broadway, now it faces Lincoln. It was a tiny store of a style I've never seen before, someday I'll try to describe it better. 710 Broadway
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6992404

Belmont Shore area of Long Beach (I think it's the second arrow from the left in Long Beach), 600 E. Broadway
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=1557191

The San Fernando location was a Tanigius after Safeway, and the local live shot above is the correct location, the center has obviously been remodeled.

I actually got a LL link for that very place in another thread here a few days ago...I really want to know what that tiny supermarket to its right was.

I'm not sure if that's a falsefronted gable or just a slightly curved roof on a boxy building.

Isn't there an active Pavillions with that awning-line style? The former Safeway (now post office) in Sacramento's Land Park neighborhood (photographed on this site) also has that style going.

Classic 1970s architecture! Looks almost just like the two 1970s Safeway locations (one now a Pet Club) in South San Francisco, the San Francisco locations at either LaPlaya or Diamond Heights, or the old Park Mall store in Pacifica - but it's a prototype I've seen in quite a few places, and similar to a few other stores's spartan look then.

However, these days, that 1970s look stands out compared to the hyper-modern concrete shapes Safeway would use later on, in the days where they falsefronted quite a few gables and marinas...a practice that hopefully ended starting with the Market Street store in SF.

Could you accurately call this a sideways gable, like some Bay Area locations that have been talked about lately?

I beleive that the "sidewards gable" is really a regular gable. It was remodeled in the 90's, and I beleive you used to enter from the street.

Ah, so it's more like the old Downey store, which is longer from front to back than side to side...

After spending quite some time looking at the San Diego map, here's the rundown (with Live Local shots) of the locations...

San Diego: Lake Murray at Navajo, now Albertsons?
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pg0 ... d%20States___

Santee: Cuyamaca at Mission Gorge, not sure which shopping center:
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pg5 ... d%20States___

Santee: Mission Gorge at Carlton Hills
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pg5 ... d%20States___

Pacific Beach (store discussed in another thread): Garnet at Ingraham, now Staples, gable?
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pfz ... d%20States___

Coronado: 9th and Orange, gable, now Vons
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pff ... d%20States___
This store was mentioned earlier in the divested thread, where this link was posted:
http://flickr.com/photos/ricoslounge/30529116/
EDIT, 11/10/06: Here's a new shot of it, showing the gable front even more clearly:
http://flickr.com/photos/heretohere/292818229/

San Diego: College Grove and College (not sure this one still exists, there's a large shopping mall in the area)
EDIT, 11/14/06: Doing my usual perusal of the Chain Store Age archive at my university's library, Safeway at one point was part of this mall when it first opened in the 1960s. Don't know what replaced it.
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pfq ... d%20States___

La Mesa: Spring and Finley, gable:

http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pfx ... d%20States___
Apparently the store's address is 3030 Grape Street...here's a good article on its kiddie rides, voted Best Grocery Store Kiddie Rides for 2001 in the San Diego Reader:
http://www.sdreader.com/php/bestshow.ph ... 001&id=140

However, by 2004, the site was under escrow, possibly to receive another chain store:

In 2005, housing units were planned for this site:

The store was still open in July 2005 though:

Some Inland Empire/eastern San Gabriel Valley/desert cities locations:

San Bernardino: 5th and E; in Carousel Mall?
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.ppj ... d%20States___

San Bernardino: North G and Highland, mentioned in the LA thread as a county administration office now...
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=734771

San Bernardino: Lynwood and Del Rosa, marina
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.ppr ... d%20States___

Googling the location, it appears this is at 3030 Del Rosa and is now a church:
http://www.sbsun.com/johnweeks/ci_3393401

EDIT (10/30): Here's quite a few photos of that Del Rosa Avenue marina, both exterior and interior...currently serving as the Iglesia de Dios de la Profecía church: http://www.iglesia-dios.org/galeria/san ... humbs1.htm

Chino: Philadelphia and Central (on the north side of Route 60, north of the eventual Pak 'n Save), not sure which of the four shopping centers here it's located in:
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pp5 ... d%20States___

Bloomington: Valley and Linden, marina
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.ppb ... d%20States___

That store is located just north of the Bloomington Post Office, which is 10191 Linden Avenue, and south of a storage place at 10047, so the address number (IF the store is on Linden and not Valley) would be between those two numbers

Upland: Foothill and Euclid, already covered here:

Fontana: Sierra and Merrill
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.ppf ... d%20States___

http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pny ... d%20States___

Corona: South Main (former Route 71) and W 6th (former US 91) at the center of the Grand Boulevard circle; not sure which building it is or which side of the intersection:
http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.pnc ... d%20States___

Pomona: Indian Hill Boulevard at Arrow, gable?
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=657697

San Dimas: E Bonita and Iglesia, marina, already mentioned in the LA thread:
http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtop ... 9&start=30

Palm Springs: Ramon at Palm Canyon (old Route 111)?
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q ... 1&t=h&om=1
