Oddly enough, a quick Google search:

The long vacant Zody's department store on Ming Avenue will soon become Bakersfield's fourth Home Depot in a deal expected to improve the corridor's profile.

The Atlanta-based home improvement chain has signed a lease to occupy the 100,000-square-foot building, situated on 7 1/2 acres in a shopping center on Ming Avenue between Akers and Stine roads. The company plans to renovate the building's facade and interior in time for an opening in late 2007.

The structure has been without a permanent tenant for 15 years. It housed a Zody's discount department store until 1986. Kmart then brought a Builders Square store to the site. After Builders Square's closure in 1991, Kmart continued to pay rent on the building until it filed for bankruptcy in 2002 and got out of its lease.

I dont recall ever seeing a going out of business ad in the La Times, but I do have an article from when they announced their closure, and it said 32 Zody's outlets in California and Nevada.

So lets start a list.

Please PRIVATE MESSAGE ME A LOCATION that is not on this list so I may add it to the list. If you know what it is today, please let me know. See my entries.

And here we go:
1. Alhambra (Valley Bl) - Staples / Big 5 / Big Lots
2. Montebello (Via Campo) - Max Foods / 99 Cent Only Store
3. Pasadena (Lake Ave) - 2 level, status unknown. Still standing
4. Lynwood (Imperial Hy) - Food 4 Less
5. Norwalk (Imperial Hy) - Food 4 Less
6. Carson (Sepulveda Bl) - Food 4 Less
7. East Los Angeles (First St) - Food 4 Less
8. Covina (Azusa Ave) - Food 4 Less
9. Hollywood (Sunset Bl)- Food 4 Less
10. Pomona (Holt Ave) - Giant By Ralphs (Closed); School
11. Fountain Valley (Beach Bl)? - Kmart (closed); Status unknown

16.
17.
18.

A heads up: private messaging is disabled on this board so there's no way for contact in that manner.

Anyway, the Zody's locations I personally know in the Sacramento area, which became Pak 'n Saves in 1984:

- Arden Way and Watt Avenue (I think this is now a Safeway and a few other stores) in Arden-Arcade
- Greenback Lane and San Juan Avenue in Citrus Heights (now a Safeway)
- Florin Road at Stockton Boulevard, near Florin Mall in South Sacramento/Florin: closed as a Pak 'n Save a few years ago; a Dollar Tree on the right side of the building is in the process of moving a block away to a building in the former Florin Mall outlot (on Stockton Boulevard); this was a White Front at one point in time according to Charles Hathaway's research.

From a 11/28/1985 ad which only lists cities and not addresses:
Alhambra, Anaheim-Buena Park, Anaheim-Fullerton, Boyle Heights, Burbank, Canoga Park, Carson-Torrance, City of Industry, El Monte, Fountain Valley, Hollywood, Inglewood, Long Beach, Lynwood, Montebello, North Hollywood, North Long Beach, Norwalk, Pomona, Redondo Beach, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Ana, Slauson, Slauson-Vermont, West Covina.

Here are a few location I can remember:
Ladera Heights, Slauson and Fairfax--HomeClub/HomeBase, now Home Depot
North Hollywood, Sherman Way near Coldwater Canyon--HomeClub/HomeBase/House2Home, now Hispanic grocery store
Northridge, Devonshire and Reseda--Ralphs, then Vons, now a Korean market called Galleria
Riverside, Tyler and Magnolia across from Tyler Mall
Industry, Hacienda and Valley
Redondo Beach, on Hawthorne Blvd near the Galleria, Ralphs Giant, now Ralphs (I think it's been mentioned that this is the only Giant that became a Ralphs and not F4L)

And here are some addresses from a Tyco ad in 1977:
Anaheim Fullerton-120 E Orangethorpe
Anaheim-Buena Park-121 N Beach Blvd
Burbank-845 N San Fernando Rd (I don't think this address is correct since it comes up as part of Burbank Airport. I think this store was where IKEA is now.)
Canoga Park-8201 Topanga Cyn
El Monte-2901 N Santa Anita
Fountain Valley-16111 Harbor Blvd
Fullerton-120 E Imperial Hwy
Huntington Beach-6912 Edinger
Inglewood-3200 Century Blvd
Long Beach-5933 Spring St
Long Beach-2185 E South St
Los Angeles-437 S Broadway
Lynwood-4050 Imperial Hwy

The 2-level Pasadena store was a Savon on the ground level with the upper level empty the last time I saw it, so I guess it's a CVS now.

I believe this is the location on Broadway:
http://www.lottaliving.com/gallery/main ... temId=7668

From public auction ads in 1985:
San Jose, 920 Blossom Hill
Sunnyvale, 121 El Camino Real
San Jose, 375 N. Capitol
Garden Grove, 9852 CHapman
Fresno, 5422 Blackstone
Oxnard, 830 Wagon Wheel Rd

What's the address of that West Covina Zody's? I mentioned in some other post that I thought the Food4Less (Ralphs/Kroger-owned, #337) on Azusa/Puente was a former Zody's and when it closed Ralphs acquired the site to open up their warehouse store called Giant, since the oval sign is on Azusa. I first saw it as Giant. See if Zody's matches 615 North Azusa, which is the current address for F4L.

Here are the Michigan locations I'm aware of, all former Yankee stores.

* Dort Mall, Dort Hwy. (M-54), Flint (later Sears Outlet, now Perani's Hockey World and Bargain Hunterz thrift store)

* Gratiot (M-46), Saginaw (later 3•D, then Tradeway, then Hills, currently Kmart. All of the above changes were made within five years of each other!)

* Port Huron (later 3•D, then Tradeway, then Farmer Jack. Now Kroger?)

* Center Ave. (M-25), Essexville (later 3•D, then Tradeway, then Meijer Square, now Kroger)

There were many other Yankee stores, but I don't know how many more converted to Zody's if any.

The San Bernardino site is 4FL, and a vacant PayLess Drug Store. The PayLess portion has been vacant since ~1994.

It is across the street from Inland Center Mall.

Here is an oddity.

The old Zody's Montebello on Via Campo still retains some original paint job in it.

They tore out the deli area in the Max Foods and the original Purple, Plum, Pink tones of the Zody's store are still painted on the wall! It was hidden above the ceiling line of the Deli for the last 21 years. Only this one wall has it, but still, amazing to see that its still there.

Wow, that brings back memories. I wonder if there was anything in the backroom of the Max Foods.

Now is the Hollywood store the Food 4 Less store?
