Bullocks Wilshire

Post by luckysaver »

LA Conservancy is planning a fundraiser event at the campus of Southwestern Law School, better known as Bullocks Wilshire. The cost is at least $300/person and is a rare opportunity to take an architectural look at the historic Bullocks Wilshire and I think it includes a walk through of parts of the library, which occupies sections of former Bullocks departments. From their website below:

30th Anniversary Gala at Bullocks Wilshire,
Presented by City National Bank
Saturday, November 22, 2008
Silent Auction Pre-Bidding Through
Wednesday, November 19

Join the Conservancy for a singular opportunity to revisit the Bullocks Wilshire experience as we celebrate thirty years of historic preservation in Los Angeles. If you can't attend the gala, you can still participate in our silent auction by bidding online before 5 p.m. PST on Wednesday, November 19.

Saturday, November 22, 2008
Cocktail reception 6-9 p.m.
Dinner in the former penthouse Tea Room 8:30-10:30 p.m.*

Opened in 1929, the elegant Art Deco Bullocks Wilshire department store quickly became the city’s premier shopping destination for generations of Angelenos. After the store closed in 1993, the building's fate hung in the balance until neighboring Southwestern Law School purchased it for campus expansion, painstakingly restoring the building's historic elements and adapting it for state-of-the-art academic use. The project exemplifies preservation at its finest, earning the Conservancy’s esteemed President’s Award in 2005.

Join us for a singular opportunity to revisit the Bullocks Wilshire experience as we celebrate thirty years of historic preservation in Los Angeles.

Shop in the silent auction boutique.
Dine on hors d’oeuvres inspired by the original Bullocks Wilshire Tea Room menu.
Admire the vintage fashions modeled by live mannequins.
Savor the exquisite interior design of an Art Deco masterpiece.

An evening in this beloved Los Angeles landmark is a very rare treat, as it is now closed to the public.

*Dinner is a benefit of Perfumer sponsorship and above. Please see sponsorship options below for details.

I remember Bullocks Wilshire's store in Palm Desert. Originally it was a Bonwitt-Teller, then BW. It later became an I Magnin, Bullocks Men, then Macy's Mens/Furniture, and recently torn down for a Nordstrom.

Poor Palm Desert, if Robinsons-May didn't close thier 2nd store in the mall, this mall could have had 4 Macys stores in it!

Bullocks Wilshire referred to the location (Wilshire Blvd Miracle Mile) of one of the L.A. area Bullocks department stores. So the one in Palm Desert would have been known as Bullocks Palm Desert.

Nope.

Bullocks opened a few Bullocks Wilshire stores.
The Wilshire Blvd store became the flagship of this small chain.

It was more upscale than a regular Bullocks Store. Palm Desert had both a Bullocks store, and a Bullocks Wilshire. I think there were only a couple of stores in this division. Think of it more like an I.Magnin store than a Bullocks.

I found an article about the chain: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_h ... _n14999714
RENAMING BULLOCK'S WILSHIRE

LOS ANGELES -- After 60 years in business as Bullock's Wilshire, the seven-unit chain will be renamed I. Magnin, effective Feb. 1.

The Bullock's Wilshire stores came under the jurisdiction of I. Magnin following the acquisition by R.H. Macy & Co. of Bullock's, I. Magnin and Bullock's Wilshire in April 1988.

Seven units. Two are known so far. There are 5 more.

Here is another article about them: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.h ... A96E948260
The third merger would involve the existing California division, based in San Francisco, and the newly acquired Bullock's and I. Magnin. Macy's California operates 25 stores with estimated sales of $1.4 billion. Bullock's includes 22 department stores under its name and six specialty stores known as Bullocks Wilshire, both based in Los Angeles, with total estimated sales of $825 million. I. Magnin, which has its headquarters next to the Macy's California flagship store on Union Square in San Francisco, has 26 specialty stores with sales of about $325 million.
I tried looking for all 7 locations. I know two. I want to say I know a third...

Well, I did find this:
Former Bullocks Wilshire Locations
Southern California

* Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale MSA
o Wilshire Boulevard (freestanding) (flagship), Los Angeles (Wilshire Center), (opened 1929, became I. Magnin in 1990)
o The Shops at Palos Verdes (now The Avenue of the Peninsula) Palos Verdes (opened 1970s, became I. Magnin in 1990)
o The Promenade at Woodlands Hills Men's Store (now Westfield Promenade), L.A. (Woodland Hills) (opened 1970s, became I. Magnin in 1990)
* Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario MSA
o Palm Desert Town Center (now Westfield Palm Desert), Palm Desert (opened 1987 in former Bonwit Teller, became I. Magnin in 1990)
o Palm Springs (freestanding), Palms Springs (opened 1947, became I. Magnin in 1990)
* San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos MSA
o La Jolla Village Square, San Diego (La Jolla) (opened 1980, became I. Magnin in 1990)
* Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine MSA
o Fashion Island, Newport Beach (opened 1970s, became I. Magnin in 1990)

I have a very nice book on the history of Bullock's Wilshire (the original) that confirms this. it mentions specifically that the apostrophe was removed from the name of the new chain.
