Groves, Tx.?!? Keep in mind I'm not doubting you in any way but what the heck were they doing down there? There must be a story behind that one.

I could not believe it myself, as I thought that San Antonio was the only area of Texas they had stores. I was wrong. From all the research I've done, Barkers operated in NY, NJ, CT, RI, PA, TX, LA, along with Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. I have yet to locate any in RI or PA, and only 1 in NJ, but I have a lead on a Virgin Islands location. And they had 63 stores in operation in 1980.

Also, was the Clifton Park,NY store in Elnora,NY?? I have a link to a Barker sales ad that states Elnora,NY, but it is SO close to Clifton Park...

And, I have another link that states that in May 1981, Kings converted several former Barkers to Kings. Not mentioned are Bath,NY, Canandaigua,NY, Cortland,NY, Endwell,NY, and Binghamton,NY...I will post link if anyone wants to see it.

Total now is 42, not counting the 5 in the last part of my message.....

This is the post I originally read on amesfanclub: "I believe that a Barkers in Clifton Park later beacame a Joy's Department store in the 80's sometime".

Based on that, the store location is at the corner of Route 146 & 146A, which is about 2 miles west of the intersection of Routes 9&146 (this is today's main retail area for Clifton Park, but much of it dates later than the time of Barkers).

Per a map I have, it shows Elnora about 1.5 miles north of the 146/146A intersection, and Clifton Park Center about 1/2 mile south of the intersection.

So - they probably did call it Elnora, even if Clifton Park Center would have been technically closer.

Funny part - there are numerous little "named areas" in that vicinity - I've heard of the others but had never heard of Elnora until you posted it (first I was trying to figure out if you meant something else and had just mistyped it)!

After doing a bit more research, the address listed for both the Elnora and Clifton Park stores are the same, " Vischer Ferry Road and Rt. 146 (exit 9 off Northway). It looks like for the first few years in the early 1970's, Barkers ads had Elnora as the town, then switched to Clifton Park.

I'm adding Wallingford,CT to the list.

But I also have a question about this location. I have links that say there was a store in Wallingford,CT, so my question is this...Before Barkers took over the Grants in Meriden Mall in 1975, was this where Barkers was (became a Zayres??)?? Location would be Old Colony Road, Wallingford,CT...there was also a Flea Market there later. Locations would be TOO close in my opinion. Thanks in advance...
