Yeh...we can only hope that the funky front stays! Not!
What is also amazing is the size of the original building. If it was large enough to divide into a Mervyn's AND a Target. Wonder if the site rivaled the size of today's Walmart Supercenters?

Yes, it is large (the building seen below at top left):Dean wrote:What is also amazing is the size of the original building. If it was large enough to divide into a Mervyn's AND a Target. Wonder if the site rivaled the size of today's Walmart Supercenters?
Riverside, Calif. - Galleria at Tyler and environs (1991)
According to a permit issued by the city in 1971, the building was just under 185,000 sq. ft.
When Mervyn's opened in July 1983, a newspaper article says it took $7.7 million and 4 months to refurbish 79,000 sq. ft. for the store, which seems a bit large for a Mervyn's, but makes sense based upon the roof division between Target/Mervyn's seen in the aerial above (with Target taking in the left half of the building).
And if you look closely at a larger version of the image above, you can see the hidden zig-zags at the front of the roofline.
Re: Treasury Department Stores
Awesome shot! thanks!
Indeed, you can see the hidden zig-zags. Funny how they spent millions on the building...including covering them. Why not just remove 'em then?! I guess so we could notice them so many years later!
Also note the large building 2 over to the right. That had been Zody's...turned HomeClub/Base. The distinct "box" on top of the front is still evident from the photo. Not sure what it is now.

Re: Treasury Department Stores
Looking at Bing, the Zodys has been subdivided into a Sport Chalet, Bed Bath and beyond and something else I cant see.
The large entry is now in the middle of the two stores and not used anymore, but you can still see it

Re: Treasury Department Stores
I know of 2 Treasury stores in the Chicago area.
Golf/Milwaukee in Niles IL - Original building still there, has been converted over the years to Venture, KMart and now currently Wal-Mart
Golf/Algonquin in Rolling Meadows IL - Building torn down, replace by Meadows Town Mall. That building torn down, now a Wal-Mart
