My first job out of high school was at Woolco's in the McCain shopping center across from McCain Mall in North Little Rock. I worked there for a couple of months in 79. I worked part time as a stock boy. It had the Red Grill which I had to clean every Wednesday. I also remember on payday they didn't give you a check, they gave you a pay envelope with your money. Kind of old-timey, like that's how all the stores paid their employees in the old days. I wonder if any store does that now? The store closed a few years later then a Target opened up there. And it is still there.

Most locations hung on until the very end with Ames.
Three year old question, but what the heck. I think the one at Phoenix Village Mall in Arkansas and the one at Buford-something Mall (now Plaza Fiesta) both closed in 1980.

For the record, the two Zayre stores I know of in Michigan, both in Kalamazoo, closed in 1991ish. One actually shared a mall with a Hills for less than a year. Apparently even in the 1990s, nobody stood a chance against Meijer.

I don't know where those Woolworth's or that Woolco were located though.

The Woolworth's on the right looks like it could have been the one in Tracy on West 10th Street. The facade and street frontage looks right.

Long time since this thread was replied to, but does anyone know where Woolco was in Nassau County (LI/NY) aside from East Meadow and Jericho (both of which were Great Eastern locations originally)? I figure there had to have been a few more scattered around but I can't seem to find much information.

Been doing some research through the Nassau County (NY) tax records and found out some things, notably (for this thread) that the Jericho store was also a Grant's at some point. I'm assuming it was before Great Eastern. Still no luck finding any more Woolco stores aside from what I already know of though.

Some of the other Suffolk County, NY Woolco Locations were at East Patchogue (leveled, now a Lowe's), Lake Ronkonkoma (now a kohl's) and Rocky Point (now a kohl's). From what I have been told these were all Grants stores that turned into Woolco, then Caldor! Hope this helps!

Some additions:

NC - Charlotte: Wilkinson Blvd. Torn down, now site of Wal-Mart Supercenter.

FL - Tampa: Busch Plaza. Mostly vacant. Big Lots in what I assume is part of the Woolco building. (Photo 1) (Photo 2)

So those malls weren't just a Philadelphia phenomenon? Interesting. Are there any in mind? I recommend any of these: MacDade Mall (Holmes, PA), Village Mall (Willingboro, NJ), Village Mall (Horsham, PA), Woodhaven Mall (Bensalem, PA), or Rising Sun Plaza (Cheltenham, PA). Bucks County Mall (Feasterville, PA), Tri-State Mall (Claymont, DE), and Tri-Towne Plaza (Marlton, NJ) are similar malls but had Clover, Grant City, and Kmart rather than Woolco.

Jackson Mall in Jackson, MS, had a Woolco as third anchor. It was there from the time the mall opened until the chain folded in 1982.

I'm surprised that there apparently weren't any Woolcos in the Detroit area as far as I can tell. Were they that afraid to go fight Kmart in its home base? Or have I just overlooked some?

They may have had them in Windsor. ON. Ads from Detroit radio stations would speak of things being available at Woolco. I doubt that they meant the ones in Toledo.

In columbus, Ohio, they were at Great Southern and Great Western for sure. I think they also were at Graceland and Great Eastern.
