That's a whole different animal from the original cafeteria grills of the 1960s, alas...

Our KCafes seem to be mostly Little Caesars and usually-non-working Icee machines.

Seems like back in the day they even had slicers at the deli, so the time to get the subs was at the end of the blue light special when they ran out of premade ones and they had to make some more with fresh meat & cheese.

Along with those deep-fried burrito things that came in pizza flavor, BBQ flavor, etc.

[I was thinking the same thing, except that the year is 1983, and I preferred lunch at Weinstock's Garden Room to the dimly lit KMart Cafeteria.

I don't remember it as the Garden Room, but as Harris & David's. (Not to be confused with Harry & David the chocolate guys)

Our Weinstock's had a Harris & David's as well, up until Macy's bought them. (At that time, Macy's closed the Weinstock's as they had a Macy's at the other end of the mall. Local Dept. store chain Gottschalk's relocated to the old Weinstock's, and the cafe' space is now Women's wear or something like that.)

For those who want to know, I live three blocks from KMart #1 in Garden City -- and it still has its eatery almost as it was when the store opened in '62. It was (and is) all open air with no walls to speak of since I've been there. And they still serve all the classic items. It's located at the front of the store next to the registers, with the Icees and popcorn actually tucked behind them against the front wall of the store. I've not seen another similarly designed arrangement anywhere else.

Our local K-Mart here in Elizabeth City was either a late sixties to seventies-era store and retained its rear wooden-latticed cafeteria until it moved to a larger location in the mid 1990s.

Too bad K mart became Sears mart. I remember the one on San Fernando Road in Los Angeles had it's cafe in the back between the linen's and sporting goods. Yellow and Brown were the colors and it was cafeteria style.
The Deli was in front to the left of the registers, and i remember when ICEE came out with the cola flavor, and you got to love those shrink wrapped hogies.
Ah, the '70s

Many KMart stores in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington have recently completely removed the restuarants (from the Little Caesars era)from the stores to make room for Sears appliance departments.

K-Mart Cafeteria

Our K-Mart in Anniston, AL had a cafeteria in the back of the store until about 1997 or 98. It was built around 1968 and was the type with the wood lattice that protruded out into the store, complete with yellow glass, little lighting, and the "cafeteria" sign across the front. It became the sporting goods department when it was turned into a Big K in the late 1990s.

I was part of the crew that opened store 7529 in Rancho Cucamonga on Haven Ave. The store opened with a Cafeteria tucked into the back wall between receiving and the offices. We also had the deli in front of the registers on the front wall between the main entrance and the cosmetics dept. The cafeteria had the regular stuff [hamburgers, sandwiches, etc.] but it also had different meals of the day. I remember the steam trays between the register and the coke machine with vegetables, salisbury steak, meat loaf and other good lunch items. The ladies that worked in there were alway wonderful and wore brown and orange uniforms. I was an area supervisor and can remember the deli calling me to help them make ham sandwiches. I would alway make a healthy batch and buy them at closing for almost nothing [hah blue light specials]. I remember around 8 or 830 pizza and taco snacks were a quarter. A couple of those and and icee, whoohoo. I worked at the store from 82 to 85
