I was looking at an old phone book the other day, and noticed an adress for a Thrifty's Coffee Shop. Does someone have any information on this coffee shop operation. I know it was fairly common back in day for drugstores and supermarkets to have coffee shop operation.

heres the adress for the one in Lancaster

The first Thrifty's I remember had a coffee shop...on Atlantic Blvd in Maywood, CA. There was an entrance in the front as it was on the corner, as well as another entrance at the end of a long ramp at the rear of the building, where the parking was. Next to that ramp was the coffee shop. Was it Thrifty's that managed the shop or someone else? I couldn't tell you.

The building's roof was heavily damaged during a storm in 1982 and never re-opened as a Thrifty's.

Two Thrifty Drug stores in Fresno had coffee shops;
-4880 E Kings Canyon Rd.
-1825 E Ashlan Ave.
The E Kings Canyon store had opened in November 1961, but the Coffee Shop was added in May 1964. The E Ashlan Ave. store had a coffee shop from the time it opened in November 1969. Not sure if the coffee shops were seperate or integrated. The Thrifty at 8400 Van Nuys Blvd. in Panorama City opened around 1951, but the completely seperate Thrifty coffee shop next door opened in August 1975. This later became a Heritage House, which it was at least up to 1988.
I am wondering what the difference was between these Thrifty Coffee Shops of the 1960s and '70s, and the Thrifty Fountain Grills of the 1940s and 50's.
44226 W 10th St. in Lancaster is the same address as Rite Aid now.

I used to eat at a Thrifty Coffee Shop in Covina on the corner of Arrow and Citrus when I worked for Superior Super Warehouse. The entire shopping center has been remodeled then torn down and rebuilt now. No remnants left. I did like the liver and onions they served...yum yum!

If I remember correctly the Thrifty is where the Peter Piper Pizza is today, and the Cafe was the corner shop. This was a cafe way after the remodel, and still is a mexican restaurant.

I recall the Thrifty at Blackstone & Ashlan in Fresno had a Curtis restaurant in it until the late 80's. The restaurant was accessed through a door inside Thrifty. When they sold it to an independent operator, they put a big ice freezer over the door. When Thrifty closed, the doorway was walled over.
