Cork 'n Cleaver

Post by buckhead »

At one time Chart House operated the Cork 'n Cleaver group of steakhouses. They were spread across a number of states, especially in the Rocky Mountain states, the Midwest, and the East. I remember several locations in Florida, but all the ones in the Orlando area were sold off or converted to other uses in the late 80's. Some of the remaining ones were spun off by Chart House to former executives. There appear to be a few left (Ft. Wayne, Milwaukee, Phoenix-Scottsdale, Fargo, and probably some other locations), but I'm not sure if they were ALL part of the original chain, although the chain originated in Scottsdale. I know the ones in Orlando had a distinctive Southwestern theme/style...sort of an adobe Mission look. The signage was also interesting. Does anyone have photos showing these buildings either in their original use or possibly in their current incarnation? I know I always liked the look and feel of the places.

Provided are links to the location in Fargo (and another logo link), which obviously has at least retained the original logos for use on their website:

Of course the Chart House story is a tangled mess, but this part of the corporation was one of their better units.

Were they of any relation to the now defunct Cask N' Cleaver chain that was mainly in California?

I'm not familiar with Cask n' Cleaver, so I can't answer that one. I do know that Cork n' Cleaver DID acquire and convert some units of the Bodega chain. It is also possible that when Cork n' Cleaver started disposing of properties that interim owners renamed them, maybe to Cask n' Cleaver, but that is speculation on my part.

Sorry for not being more helpful.

This brand appears to be unrelated to The Chart House now.

The Chart House is now owned by Landry's Seafood Restaurants. Not sure when that happened. I understand The Chart House was struggling for quite a while.

Landry's looks to be an interesting company with a lot of brands and a pretty nice website though lacking from a history perspective. They appear to be in the casino and aquarium businesses as well.

Cask n Cleaver isn't defunct, they still have 7 restaurants. Web site is at http://www.caskncleaver.com/

Cask n' Cleaver (founded 1967) was operated by C&C Services, which also operated Lord Charley's Prime Rib (started 1971) and El Gato Gordo (started 1977). It doesn't look like there was any relation with Cork n Cleaver, which in the 80s owned by Pillsbury, around the same time they owned Godfather's Pizza.
