NICE shot of the Main Street marina in Winnipeg, which has been posted earlier in thread. It's a good sign that, to quote this article, this is one of "quite a few stores of a similar design still in use in Winnipeg."

Here's a new find that Storewanderer linked me to: an article on yet another active marina Safeway in Regina that I have not seen before, at 3801 Albert Street (and 25th Avenue):

Now that's a unique build for that time... Strange to see a non-marina from that era!

Safeway was in the Richmond area until 1991, left Charlottesville in 1985, and still has open a store in Culpeper, VA. They left Winchester and Woodstock, VA in the mid-late 1990's.

Safeway was open in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Utah, Texas to my knowledge, states they have since left (under the Safeway name for Texas), as well as some stores in Central Pennsylvania and around NYC.
I thought Randalls has been owned by Safeway since at least around 1984. At that time, the Marina stores started closing, while more Randalls were popping up. Lots of former Safeways in Houston became Randalls in 1988.

How was it that the Southern California Safeways became Vons and not the other way around?

Randall's was purchased by Safeway in 1999:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randall%27s

As for the latter question...KKR/Safeway sold off their Southern California division to Vons in exchange for a partial ownership stake in 1988, then bought the chain outright in 1997.

The person behind all those Winnipeg Safeway photos has just put up several blog posts on the chain's architectural history in that locale:
