Toronto: 1958 Grand Union nominated for designation

Post by justin karimzad »

Despite imminent redevelopment of the rest of the shopping center, the former Grand Union supermarket at 15 Ellesmere Rd. in Toronto, later a Dominion and now a Metro, was nominated for historical designation by the Scarborough Community Council. As a kid in the 70s/80s, I loved the Mircale Food Mart at Willowdale Plaza for its heroic arch. The lighting in the store I remember as being a bit dimmer, too; more ambient...mood lighting in a supermarket!

This Metro resembles the Victor Gruen designed Penn Fruits of the same era,.
