Bradlees/Walmart

Post by Ephrata1966 »

Kind of odd the Fairless Hills one was replaced by BOTH Giant and Wal-Mart. Most Bradlees became Wal-Mart. Only mine (Broomall) became Giant. I thought that had to do with Stop & Shop's owning Bradlees until 1992, and keeping the real estate. But apparently this property, including the former A&P next door, is still owned by Vornado Real Estate. Vornado is a company descended from Two Guys. And yes, they are the same company as the fan manufacturer.

In fact, today I passed the former Two Guys/PACE/Sam's Club in Hatboro. Hard to believe it's still empty. I heard that property was "leased" a few years ago. It had actually been owned by Wal-Mart/Sam's Club, but perhaps Vornado bought it back?

By the way, the older Wal-Mart in Warminster replaced a Channel hardware/lumber store. So did the Genuardi's (now Safeway) in Wilmington, DE. The Warminster one closed when Rickel bought Channel, because there was a Rickel nearby. My local Channel, almost in my backyard, was a Penn Fruit (Springfield).

Most Bradlees did not become Walmarts only a few in fact there are plenty of abandoned Bradlees in the New Jersey area that still sit lonely.

Yes but the majority of them did, if they became anything.

There was no Bradlees in Fairless Hills. The Giant and now-shuttered Wal-Mart replaced the former Penn Fruit Company store and United Artists-Eric Fairless Hills 3 Theatre in Fairless Hills. The closest Bradlees to Fairless Hills was the Bradless (Former Two Guys/Jefferson Ward, and current The Dump) on Lincoln Highway in Langhorne-Levittown, PA

The Walmart at Franklin Mills Mall replaced the Bradlees there. In fact, every business that shares the Walmart building at Franklin Mills, including Bradlees-Walmart (minus the smaller stores to the right of the Walmart entrance) replaced the old Carrefour Hypermarket that was there

from what I can tell, the parking lot area in front of the Giant and now vacant Wal-Mart building is where the Penn Fruit was.

I also think a portion of the Giant was built on the site of the Eric Fairless Hills 3 Theatre
