202 N Broadway, Beaverton, is a bizarre looking Bed Bath & Beyond that still displays some of the Marina shape to the right.

Cedar Hills Shopping Center became a short-lived Thriftway, then Big Lots, and as of last year was Harbor Freight Tools. The pylon is still there.

What I can tell from my visits to Portland:
3940 SE Powell: Store was rebuilt several years ago and has a two-level parking facility

SE 82nd and Foster: Half now Big 5 Sporting Goods, half now a clothing? store called Top To Bottom

Jantzen Beach:Store was rebuilt sometime in the early 90s as a "Safeway Marketplace" store. Due to its proximity to Interstate 5, there is a possibility this store may be affected if the project to rebuild the nearby I-5 bridge moves ahead.

1st and Pacific hwy, Tigard, now Jo-Ann Fabrics

410 A St. Lake Oswego: A Marina store, still open, which received a very nicely done lifestyle remodel before Safeway adapted new signage, one of the first Lifestyle remodels in the Portland area.

The old Jantzen Beach location, for all those interested, was at address 11920 N Union Avenue (at Marine Drive) (opening date: March 1962), which was killed off, which moved the store to 11919 N Jantzen Drive. The replacement store opened December 16, 1989.

Prior to opening the store at 82nd & Foster on August 18, 1969, Safeway had a store located at 5345 SE 79th Ave. But I find it odd that even after the 79th Ave. location moved three blocks east to 82nd, that Safeway continued to operate a much older store located near 92nd & Foster (9038 SE Foster Rd.) for about a year, considering the newer 82nd Ave. store was only ten blocks west of that store, when you consider the older 79th Ave. store was 13 blocks west from that '40s location.

The replacement Jantzen Beach store has kind of an odd layout in that the produce section is separated from the rest of the store.

It looked cool and made more sense in the "Marketplace" days. In the Lifestyle format, it's similar to a Dominick's layout. I'm guessing the old format didn't have a drop ceiling and that's the key difference, but I can't remember for sure...

The old Safeway on 7020 NE Sandy Blvd. had opened in 1958 and closed in late 1972 and became known as Rose City Church of the Nazarene the next year. The building was a gable design. The road sign, which was removed at some point in the early 1980s, was similar to the 122nd & Division St. (2626 SE 122nd Ave.) Safeway which opened in February 1959 and lasted until about 1971.

Safeway did re-enter Rose City in 1992, its new store (then using the then-current Marketplace motif) opening where a Fred Meyer had been. The Freddy's store on 6939 NE Sandy Blvd. opened sometime in 1949, was remodeled in 1955, and ceased business on April 20, 1991.

Sorry to bump this old of a thread, but I want to say that three of the locations listed date from the 1930s. They are, according to http://www.portlandmaps.com/:

2240 NE Sandy Blvd. - opened 1940
2416 NE Fremont St. - opened 1938
1012 NW 21st Ave. - opened 1932

These three stores, all of which ceased to exist under Safeway by June 1972, were the last ones to date from then, for by 1980 the oldest location was the (reconfigured in 1974) 3940 SE Powell Blvd. location, which first opened in 1941. The 9038 SE Foster Rd. store would've been shut down by early 1970, naturally because it was eight blocks east of the then-new 5420 SE 82nd Ave. store, which opened on August 18, 1969.

The youngest locations to bite the dust by June 1972 were:
1440 SE Powell Blvd. - opened 1953
2626 SE 122nd Ave. - opened 1959 (a new location about a mile south from this store opened on October 19, 1977)
4747 E. Burnside St. - opened 1958 (may have been an older building before this year)
911 Main St., Oregon City - opened 1950

Gone by 1976, without nearby replacement locations, were:
7119 SE Milwaukie Ave. - opened 1941
1335 N. Mason St. - opened 1952
5600 NE 42nd Ave. - opened 1941/1957
7020 NE Sandy Blvd. - opened 1941/1958
2671 NW Vaughn St. - opened 1941
4411 SW Vermont St. - opened 1955

During the 1970-80 period, the greater Portland metro area witnessed the closure of nine locations and at least four new stores.

By 1970, the number of stores by decade were:
1930-1939: 3
1940-1949: 5 or 6
1950-1959: 10
1960-1969: 18

But in 1980, the number of stores by decade were:
1940-1949: 1
1950-1959: 3
1960-1969: 18
1970-1979: 4

ReRack

2240 Sandy is now a store that buy sells and trades Yakima and Thule racks. ReRack acquired the building from an auto dealer that was using the building as a diesel repair shop. The auto dealer lost their franchise to sell new cars when the auto industry restructured in 2008. In the 1980's when the dealer bought the building they wanted to be able to display cars in front of the store along Sandy Blvd. so they cut off the end of the building and had it filled with cinder blocks. If anyone has historic photos of the building I would be very interested in them!
