When Did K-Mart First Come to Portland, OR?

Post by StoreLiker2006 »

This is a very tough question: when did K-Mart first come to Portland, OR?

The locations:
*13750 S.E. Johnson Rd., Milwaukie, OR (opened c. 1968-70)
*2315 S.E. 82nd Ave., Portland, OR (opened c. 1968-70)
*19003 Beaver Creek Rd., Oregon City, OR (opened 1989)

Something tells me K-Mart didn't set foot in Oregon until sometime in 1970.

What about the Kmart at 122nd & Sandy (#4288)? Not sure what year it opened, but it is an older store...

Milwaukee (4406) also opeend on 3/25/71. Oregon City shows as opening on 7/5/90. I can't find info on the 2315 SE 82nd store, but I suspect that it was replaced by one of the others; there's no trace of it anywhere. A fifth store was at 1716 Jantzen Beach Center, and it opened in 1977. It was closed in 2003.

I am not sure the 82nd store had a direct replacement. The next closest locations would have been Milwaukie (demolished, now a Carmax dealership) and 122nd. Oregon City and The Dalles were both 90s-build stores though. The 82nd store was a Builders Square in its later years, but am not sure what year it became a Builders Square. That building was demolished long ago.

Around the Portland area, Kmart did have locations in Hillsboro (now WinCo foods), McMinnville (now Safeway) and Vancouver (now Living Hope Church) and Tualatin (demolished, now a Cabelas on the site)

Hmm, the store on 82nd ave just north of division did become a builders square (Kmart subsidiary) back 86-87? It was closed out by 88 if I remember correctly.

Beaverton store on murray gone as well. Going to be more glorious apartments. Myself, two cousins and two friends and my aunt all worked there at one time or another.
