Newark is now updated through 1964. That may be as far as it will go; no cty directories were published after 1964 and the telephone directories are all but useless.

The Safeways do not appear to have continued as Finasts.

Nope. I noticed that too. They tended to be small, older stores and probably were not very attractive to a new owner. Safeway apparently did not make much of an investment in Newark over the years.

Hi, there was a Safeway on Springfield Avenue in Newark ,a few blocks from Irvington that became a Finast .It was sacked during the riots and Finast reopened it. Its twin existed on Broadway in Bayone, that was replaced by a store that was the sister to Tappan and Ossining. Both Newark and the original Bayonne store were in the middle of the shopping district with sidewalk frontage and parking in the rear. Both originaly had fwo fronts. Newark closed prior to the chain pulling out ofJersey, along with Springfield and Montclair.
