The Chronicle calls the location "North Beach" but the area is much closer to the waterfront than to the core of the North Beach district...
I recall this only became a Safeway ca. 1986 and was another supermarket chain beforehand - from the Groceteria list of SF stores, it was a Mayfair in 1970, then "Co-op" from 1975-1985.

Re: Safeway in San Francisco's Fishermans Wharf area closing
This store kept the old pre-lifestyle signs outside and in the mall, but was a fairly early Lifestyle remodel.
Not to go too far down the current event topic but this store was remodeled inside in 2022 for some reason and now it is closing. The Madera Pak N Save that closed in 2022 was also remodeled inside in 2021. I'm sure it has happened but I've never in recent decades seen Safeway close just remodeled stores like this.
I do wonder if another grocer is slated to take the space, or possibly Target.

Grocery Outlet has expressed interest in the space:
https://sfstandard.com/business/north-b ... king-over/
They currently already are in a marina former Safeway on Bayshore Boulevard at the SF/Daly City line, as well as the former Cala stores on South Van Ness and on Geary and the former Bell (later Fresh & Easy) on Silver Avenue.

IIRC Grocery Outlet has been in a marina on Broadway in Oakland for years as well.
There are more residents nearby who use the North Beach location than you might think (and most residents do call the area North Beach as well, correctly or incorrectly). Co-op was a Berkeley-based membership cooperative that had as many as 10 or 12 stores at one point. It imploded in 1988, but may have vacated this location about 1986. The Safeway was actually a replacement store for a demolished marina at Columbus and Chestnut that closed in 1988.
It was actually a nice store. I was in there fairly often back when I still lived in SF and had a friend who lived across the street.
