Intriguing SoCal chain: Superior Super Warehouse

Post by TheStranger »

After looking up the old Chino Pak N Save and finding out it was Superior Super Warehouse, I decided to poke around a bit in Live Local and get some birdseye overheads of these stores, some of which are castoffs from the big chains.

Covina used to be a Smith's market, later Lucky's that closed when they were bought by Albertsons.

The one on Ave 45 was a Lucky, and Albertsons that closed last year. They are working to save the architecture:

(close up pictures taken down however)

3600 Cesar Chavez was a Safeway. In fact, a Marina Safeway (look at the pictures and you can see the slight curvature of the roof).
This was a Tianguis in 86 then Vons when Tianguis was folded. It closed in the mid 90's.

Here's a confirmation, from a labor movement website, that that was a Safeway:

http://www.farmworkermovement.org/essay ... Andres.pdf
We boycotted many markets in East L.A. such as Safeway on Fourth and Soto streets and at Rowan Avenue and Cesar E. Chavez (formerly Brooklyn Avenue).
I have to admit, Superior's false front really (unfortunately) did much to make it hard to discern the original marina look of the building.

Actually, the building was remodeled with the fake front when Tianguis opened. So its been hidden for years. Superior has no ceiling tiles in most locations, so I wonder if they have the marina ceiling visible. I should stop by.

Jeff beat me to the punch on the lottaliving discussion on the Highland Park store. :)

The North Hollywood store is a former Safeway, which I would think replaced the store on Victory that was mentioned on another thread. Later it was pretty much the only Vons in that part of the Valley.

And the Chino store was a Gemco before it went through the progression of different Vons/Safeway formats. My ex-mother-in-law picked a kitten out of a box from in front of it when it was a Vons in 1991 and I still have that kitty today :)

Ah, I see - is this a winged, or rarer wingless marina? The overhead shot (with the false front) doesn't make it particularly obvious...

I walked in coming home from jury duty....and its not a Marina, but a Gable store. You can clearly see the gable with low roofed wings. For a Superior, it was relatively small, about the size of a regular Vons store. The beams are exposed and sunlights installed in the roof for more natural light.

Are you sure about that? The only Smith's I remember in Covina was the one on Azusa Ave. that became an Albertson's. I think the Superior store in Covina opened as one of those large Lucky/Sav-On combination stores (like the one in Pomona on Foothill and Garey) and was closed after the Albertson's takeover.

RE: The North Hollywood store...

The Drug Emporium in that shopping center was a Safeway. There was also a Thriftimart in that center. Safeway bought the Thriftimart and closed their own store, converting the Thriftimart into a Safeway which of course later became a Vons. Vons did a full interior and exterior remodel of the site and then closed it.

It may have been a Smith's from the Smith's Food King days, not the second time they came back with the big stores. This property was one of the stores Albertson's was forced to divest when they merged with Lucky and was intitially sold to Certified Grocers of California (now Unified Grocers) which sold it to Superior (and is currently their supplier).

No, I'm wrong. It was a new Lucky build. I'm retarded.

Speaking of Tianguis...here's a snippet of an article about it, from the time of the Safeway pullout in SoCal:

I wonder if this closed Vons in Moreno Valley is the site of the upcoming Superior...

Actually, you're right in the sense that at one time there was a Smith's Food King at that corner. But it was, of course, in a different structure and I recall it facing Citrus Ave, whereas the newer Lucky / Superior storefront faces Arrow Hwy.

Right. And it wasn't initially a Superior after Lucky closed. It was called something like "Save-a-Lot" or "Save-More" (logo had green & yellow angled block, all-cap letters on a white background) - and I think that stuck around for less than a year before Superior came in.
