Fredrick's Pharmacy (Supermarket)

Post by Steve Landry »

Dear Host and anyone else,

I am trying to do a backwards research on the Fredrick's Supermarket chain that existed in Florida (south). I know they had at least 10 stores and that Food Fair bought them early 1950's?

I have not been successful, so I thought that maybe doing research on the very early in-store (grocery/supermarket) pharmacies might be the key.

Fredrick's Supermarkets had full service in-store pharmacies as early as the 1940's. Their stores were very large, upscale and architecturally ahead of their time. I was also told that sometime before or after Food Fair bought them, there was a union labor dispute with the pharmacists that caused the pharmacies to close (inside of the stores).

Some of these pharmacies were reopened much later on under Food Fair.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!!

:)

Steve, have you tried looking at various newspaper archives online? Although most only go back a little way and charge for full articles, some don't charge for articles and some go far back (I've seen 1903).

I use a site that contains links to all of the newspaper and television station websites, arranged by state, to find local information sometimes. It's http://www.usnpl.com.

Hello Steve!

Sorry that I have been silent for a while and missed the posts.

I never heard of Fredricks supermarkets in Florida. That was way before my time! And I wish I could spend a day in a large Florida library to research that.

I will check back more frequently for any updates found on that.

Thanks Edric!! :)

Side note: These Fredrick's Supermarkets retained their name until their conversion to Pantry Pride.

Most of them had the Fredricks name on the building itself with the traditional Food Fair "tower" sign in the parking lot.

Edric,

The Fredrick's name was still in existence in the 1970's.

Also, any memories of Shell City Stores?
