Alpha Beta Locations-San Francisco Bay Area-1968

Post by Jason B. »

The Alpha Beta supermarket chain had seven locations in the San Francisco Bay Area in December 1968, according to contemporary newspaper advertisements:

(1) 1881 Ygnacio Road in Walnut Creek (closed in 2006; now Sports Basement),
(2) 460 Diablo Road in Danville (closed in 2006; now vacant?),
(3) 1430 Railroad Avenue in Livermore (21,000 square feet; opened December 11, 1968; closed in 1984; later Miller's Outpost clothing store; now Dollar Tree),
(4) San Pablo (opened in October 1967 as the first Alpha Beta in the Bay Area; this location was a Yard Birds in 2000),
(5) Los Gatos
(6) Sunnyvalle #1 and
(7) Sunnyvalle #2.

A newspaper article concerning the Livermore grand opening said that Alpha Beta was then a subsidiary of Acme Markets, Inc. of Philadelphia. The Alpha Beta headquarters and distribution center were in La Habra. The Alpha Beta chain then consisted of 154 supermarkets, 9 drug stores, 12 coffee shops and 10 floral shops. The Bay Area expansion program began in 1965 with the first Bay Area store opening in San Pablo in October 1967. Eight sites being developed in 1968, including four sites in San Jose and locations in Concord, Dublin, Campbell and Fremont.

The grand opening advertisement for the Livermore store included the "Alphy" mascot and declared:
"WE DON’T GIVE STAMPS!
WE DON’T Have GIMMICKS!
WE DON’T PLAY GAMES!
WE DO Have the LOWEST
DISCOUNT PRICES"

Among the grand opening specials at the Livermore store were a 4 ¾ lb. OVAL CAN CANNED PICNIC HAM $2.99, rump roast for 78 cents per pound and whole chicken (fresh fryers grade A whole body) for 29 cents per pound.
