Sorry I went on a posting hiatus. I have just been too busy lately!
There is a small Great Valu market in Falls Church, VA (DC Area) with lots of international foods (mostly Vietnamese). The store is called Westlawn Super Market. If you are not familiar with Great Valu, it is a grocery cooperative supplied by Supervalu. The store appears old (50's, 60's, 70's) but I wonder about the exact era/year. It looks vaguely like a former Acme (or one of their old rivals), but I am not sure what they had in Virginia. Most Great Valu stores are around Philadelphia, including Allentown. Several of the ones here were Acme, A&P or Food Fair.

UPDATE: I just heard this store closed in 2005, due to a lease dispute. Either the dispute was settled, or it just looks open in Google Maps.
The other store is in Chambersburg, PA, near historic Gettysburg. Again not exactly the Philadelphia area. This one is called Sunnyway Great Valu. I doubt it was an Acme since there were already two peaked-roof Acmes in Chambersburg, and an earlier Food Fair. I noticed that Sunnyway has the same vintage parking lot lights as the Falls Church store. You can see them in street view.

Thanks. I found that. Notice that the Greencastle Sunnyway is just like the Chambersburg store. I heard these stores could have been Grand Union.maynesG wrote:Hi, I can!t tell you what these store swere before, But I can tell you where you can see a picture of the one in PA and every other one in the group, Go to the Greast Valu web at http://www.greatvalu.com/stores.aspx.

The chain Fresh Grocer used to be Great Valu. Their original stores were Drexeline and Barclay Square. That store at 58th and Baltimore Ave. in Philadelphia was a Food Fair, then Acme, and is still Great Valu now. I wonder who owns that store... probably not Fresh Grocer... but it is not on the Great Valu site either.
These Great Valu/Fresh Grocer stores were all Food Fair too:

I don't know the full history of the store in Falls Church but I do know that it was a Grand Union at one time. When Grand Union pulled out of the DC market back in the 80s this store was one of four purchased by a group of former employees (I heard they were former managers).
