One photo is a 1950's Safeway that was in DC. The other appears to be a former Safeway in Brooklyn, NY. Both appear to be inner-city locations with limited space and the loading door is on the left. I've seen other locations like this in DC. Can anyone confirm the dates Safeway was in NYC and if this was a common design?

Roughly late 1930s through eraly 1960s, I believe.dcgrocery wrote:Can anyone confirm the dates Safeway was in NYC
Safeway sold its NYC stores to First National in '61 or '62.
The DC store looks like the one that was at 14th & Park Road, NW. There was a lot of controversy about what to do with that building in the 90s. I think it was demolished during the subway construction--it was boarded up in the early/mid-90s. The site is now a new apartment/condo development and is across the street from a new Giant.
There are newer Safeways with the side loading dock: 20th & S--its on the Right; 17th & Corocan--the Socialist/Soviet Safeway--the dock is also on the Right. My guess is that both stores date from the 60s/70s.
